His slovenly attendant, Steeve Hargraves, unnoticed yet observing, uncovers a hidden paper that hints at the tangled web of fortunes and secrets that quietly govern their uneasy existence.

Aurora Floyd Chapter XX

In which a seafaring gentleman named Captain Samuel Prodder, weather-beaten and hearty in spirit, undertakes a journey to London to visit a niece he has never before met, sharing with curious fellow travellers the tale of his long absence and hopeful reunion. Upon his arrival at the grand family estate, he learns the passage of many years and changes that time has wrought, and expresses a simple wish to be recognised and embraced by his kin, that he might harbour peace in his heart.

In which the sombre loneliness of Felden Woods reflects the old banker’s deep paternal affection and concern for his daughter Aurora, whose sudden visit brings with it an air of mystery and a pressing request for money. Amidst tender family ties and uneasy tensions, Aurora seeks financial aid from her father without revealing the cause, promising that her troubles will soon be at an end.

Aurora Floyd Chapter XVIII

In which the lovely Aurora Mellish, having just regained her spirits after recent troubles, engages in a secretive and urgent negotiation with her husband’s trainer in the shadowy night, while suspicions and watchful eyes gather around Mellish Park. As a thunderstorm brews overhead, the unfolding mystery casts a foreboding veil over the tranquil estate, leaving those within it to grapple with doubts and fears beneath the restless sky.

Aurora Floyd Chapter XVII

In which the handsome but morally dubious James Conyers takes up his post as trainer at Mellish Park, appointing the reluctant and troubled Steeve Hargraves as his attendant in an arrangement tinged with latent malice. Observing from his rustic lodge, Mr. Conyers dispatches Steeve on a charged errand to Mrs. Mellish, whose pale and imperious presence belies a concealed tumult, and who responds to the letter with cold defiance and a spark of fury.
