His most dangerous ride is just beginning—the Nuremberg Trials. October 1945: The International Military Tribunal convenes. Von Papen sits among 24 principal Nazi defendants, charged with conspiracy to wage aggressive war and crimes against peace. The prosecution argues his 1933 maneuvering placed Hitler in power and his work in Austria enabled the Anschluss that destabilized Europe.
