Von Papen sits among 24 principal Nazi defendants, charged with conspiracy to wage aggressive war and crimes against peace. The prosecution argues his 1933 maneuvering placed Hitler in power and his work in Austria enabled the Anschluss that destabilized Europe. Von Papen's defense: He was a patriot, a Catholic monarchist trying to prevent chaos and Bolshevism. He served the state, not the ideology. Tragic miscalculation, not crime.
