Trans Inside: How we got here

This podcast was recorded on unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation whose presence on this land reaches back to time immemorial. Welcome to the first episode of Trans Inside. In this episode, Julia and Sabrina explore the history of how Canadian federal corrections has treated trans and gender expansive prisoners, as a way of understanding how we got to this current mess. Content warning: This episode contains descriptions of transphobia, sexual and physical violence, and racism. The term "prisoner" is used, as well as justice involved or incarcerated person to define those that are currently incarcerated. This is done to recognize both they ways in which individuals do not want their time in prisons to define them, and to acknowledge the lived realities of how people are treated in prisons; that their personhood has been reduced to that of a "prisoner", and that more than just changing the term used is required to change this treatment.
