Der Mordfall Rita Curran Im Sommer 1971 wird die 24-jährige Lehrerin Rita Curran tot in ihrer Wohnung in Burlington im US-Bundesstaat Vermont aufgefunden. Am Tatort entdecken die Ermittler unter anderem einen Zigarettenstummel. Eine Spur, die den Fall über Jahrzehnte begleiten wird. Trotz zahlreicher Verdächtiger, unzähliger Hinweise und intensiver Ermittlungen bleibt der Täter jedoch unentdeckt. Erst mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte später bringt eine moderne DNA-Analyse Bewegung in den ältesten Cold Case Vermonts und führt die Ermittler zu einer Wahrheit, die lange verborgen geblieben war.
