Things Every Capital Student Should Do

What do Capital students do for fun? Explore the city, of course! From hot chicken and artisan ice cream, to museums, botanical exhibits, professional sports and shopping, Bexley and Columbus offer plenty of opportunities for college students who want some time away from their studies. CapChap Episode 10 showcases places around the city – several conveniently located right across the street from campus – where you can find Fang Sauce, Chihuly glass, vegan donuts, Dime-a-Dog nights, puck drops, and indie movies. Majors and Careers: Emerging Media

What do history majors and film and media production majors have in common? Watch Episode 9 of CapChat to find out! Join history student Rocky Jorgensen and Dr. Betsy Pike, assistant professor of Communication and esteemed Capital grad, as they discuss how bringing together different majors can create amazing experiences through Capital’s emerging media program. Housed in the Convergent Media Center, programs in public relations, film and media production, marketing, journalism, graphic design, and entertainment technology form a melting pot of student opportunities and areas of study. It’s all about pulling together creative students from a variety of majors across different academic disciplines and pushing them toward innovative and exciting real-world experiences.

Class Management

Whether you are a first-year student or one who is registering for their final semester, time management can be one of the most challenging aspects of being in college. In Episode 8 of CapChat, junior Allie Rus and Associate Provost Keirsten Moore talk about the demands of classes, homework, extracurricular activities, jobs, self-care and sleep, and how to fit everything into a 168-hour week. With so much to do and keep track of, strong time management skills can make all the difference. Learn strategies to set yourself up for success – from how to use planners and Post-it Notes for organization, to the importance of finding quiet, dedicated study spaces and reaching out to professors and other campus resources (such as the Academic Success and the Center for Health and Wellness) to help you be the best person you can be.

CapChat Season 2 continues with Episode 7, where you’ll learn there's a lot more to business than stock markets, supply chains and financial reports. Junior Aaron Sullivan, a dual major in Marketing and Financial Economics with a minor in Entrepreneurship, joins Finance and Economics professor Saurav Roychoudhury – more commonly known as “Dr. Roy” – to talk about job growth, internship opportunities, and the importance of having a basic understanding of business, regardless of your career path. With majors in Accounting, Financial Economics, Business Management, and Marketing, the university’s business curriculum is well-rounded in the fundamentals you'll need to be successful right out of college. Couple that with a myriad of opportunities for hands-on internships and you’ll have that competitive edge employers are looking for.

Living on a College Budget

CapChat Season 2 continues with Episode 6 and ways to be financially smart. Sophomore Taylor Adams teams up with John Brown, Capital’s director of Financial Aid, to talk about paying for college, saving for life, and understanding the importance of creating a budget. As a student who has three on-campus jobs, Taylor shares tips about how she has been able to budget for her Capital education while starting to set herself up to feel financially secure after graduation. You’ll learn about scholarship options, how to find a work-study job, and why it’s important to maximize your meal plan – including giving your taste buds a treat with Cap Bucks as one of your dining options. John offers simple ideas about budgeting that will give students a sense of control over their money and teach them how to prioritize the spending of their hard-earned dollars. He also talks about the Financial Aid staff’s commitment to working with families to help them understand various ways of paying for a Capital education.
