The VIA Character Strengths framework names twenty-four strengths. And of all of them, Honesty might be the most misunderstood. We are more likely to think of honesty as how we relate to others, but it begins within ourselves first. And the same Genius can express itself as a teacher, a strategist, an artist, abuilder, a healer — across a whole lifetime of different forms. [212] What It Means to Walk Your Path

Antonio Machado wrote a line that has stayed with me for years. Caminante, no hay camino. Se hace camino al andar. Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking. I find that line both liberating and terrifying in equal measure. And I think that's exactly right. Because the path you are walking — the one that is yours, that belongs to your particular Genius, your particular calling, your particular figure eight — is not something that was laid out before you arrived. [211] A Strength Called Spirituality

Spirituality means different things to different people. For some it's inseparable from religious faith. For others it's entirely secular — a felt sense of connection to something larger, a recognition that the individual life is embedded in something that extends beyond it. For others still, it's a word that carries enough baggage from past experiences that it needs to be approached slowly. All of that is welcome here. And today we look at it as a strength.
