TV Tuesday: The Other Bennet Sister | Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2

In this week’s TV Tuesday, we’re kicking off a brand-new series with The Other Bennet Sister, covering Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2. Based on Janice Hadlow’s bestselling novel, this BritBox series reimagines Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Mary Bennet, the quiet, bookish middle sister who has spent her life standing in the shadows of her family. These opening episodes explore Mary’s first steps into society, her growing friendship with John Sparrow, the arrival of Mr. Collins, and the difficult reality of living in a family where she often feels overlooked. ⚠️ Spoiler Note This episode contains spoilers for The Other Bennet Sister Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2. In This Episode * We kick off a brand-new TV Tuesday series with The Other Bennet Sister. * My first impressions of the series and how it compares to Janice Hadlow’s novel. * Why Mary’s opening narration perfectly sets the tone for the story. * The Bennet family dynamics and why Mary often feels like the forgotten sister. * Mrs. Bennet’s obsession with marriage and the inheritance laws that drive her decisions. * My thoughts on Mr. Bennet and why I think he deserves more criticism than he often receives. * Mrs. Hill’s quiet support of Mary and why she quickly became one of my favorite characters. * Mary’s first trip to the Meryton Assembly. * Meeting Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy, and the familiar world of Pride and Prejudice. * Mary’s sweet (and awkward) connection with John Sparrow. * Why I think Mary is drawn more to intellect than romance. * Charlotte Lucas’ advice about marriage versus becoming a spinster. * The arrival of the wonderfully quirky Mr. Collins. * My thoughts on whether Mary, John Sparrow, and Mr. Collins may share some neurodivergent traits. * Mary’s heartbreaking performance at the Netherfield Ball. * Charlotte’s surprising engagement to Mr. Collins. * The emotional ending of Episode 2 and how Mary’s future suddenly changes forever. Read It & Watch It: Enola Holmes | Book & Movie Recap + Review (Spoilers)

This month on Read It & Watch It, we’re heading to Victorian England to compare Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer with the 2020 Netflix adaptation starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter. When Enola Holmes wakes up on her birthday to discover her mother has disappeared, she sets out to solve the mystery herself. Along the way, she crosses paths with the missing Viscount Tewkesbury, deciphers secret messages, outsmarts dangerous villains, and proves she’s every bit as clever as the Holmes name suggests. In this episode, I compare the book and movie, discuss the biggest changes between the two, and share why one adaptation worked better for me than the other. Spoiler Note This episode contains full spoilers for both Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess and the 2020 Netflix film Enola Holmes. In This Episode * Introduction to this month’s Read It & Watch It pick * Book overview and first impressions * Why I found the book surprisingly cozy * My thoughts on the movie’s creative storytelling style * Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes * Henry Cavill’s version of Sherlock Holmes * Comparing Sherlock and Mycroft in the book and movie * Eudoria Holmes and the mystery surrounding her disappearance * Victorian England as the backdrop for the story * Secret ciphers, flowers, and coded messages * Enola’s disguises and detective skills * Meeting Viscount Tewkesbury * The romance that appears in the movie but not the book * Miss Harrison’s finishing school * Edith and the women’s self-defense group * The suffrage movement and how the movie expands Eudoria’s story * The biggest differences between the book and film * Why the movie’s mystery felt easier for me to follow * Comparing the endings * Final ratings and which version I preferred Book vs. Movie Changes We Discuss * Enola’s age * Sherlock’s personality * Mycroft’s role * The order of Enola’s disguises * Tewkesbury’s age and romance * Edith and the tea room * The suffrage movement storyline * The motive behind the central mystery * Eudoria’s ending * The overall pacing of the mystery Cozy Check * Victorian England * Country estates and Ferndell Hall * Bustling London streets * Secret tea rooms * Bookshops and boarding houses * Hidden messages and flower ciphers * Clever disguises * Cozy historical atmosphere * Amateur detective energy Tropes * Amateur Detective * Missing Person Mystery * Book-to-Screen Adaptation * Historical Mystery * Coming-of-Age * Secret Identity * Hidden Messages * Family Secrets * Adventure Mystery * Strong Female Lead Ratings 📚 Book: Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess Book Rating: ☕☕☕✨ (3.5/5) Cozy Rating: ☕☕☕☕ (4/5) 🎬 Movie: Enola Holmes (2020) Movie Rating: ☕☕☕☕✨ (4.25/5) Cozy Rating: ☕☕☕☕ (3.75/5) Final Thoughts This is one of those rare cases where I actually preferred the adaptation over the original book. While I appreciated the cozy atmosphere and foundation Nancy Springer created, I found the movie easier to follow, loved the creative cinematography, and thought Millie Bobby Brown completely captured Enola’s intelligence, humor, and adventurous spirit. If you enjoy historical mysteries, clever heroines, secret codes, disguises, and Victorian adventures, I think both the book and movie are worth experiencing. Next Month’s Read It & Watch It 📖 Book: Murder Is Easy by Agatha Christie 📺 Watch: Murder Is Easy (2023 BritBox adaptation) We’ll be discussing both on Monday, July 27th, so there’s plenty of time to read and watch along!
