The Night Shift — Episode G: Pressure | Romance Story

The imaging corridor closes for overnight maintenance. No window. No counter. No station. No 2:17. Lucy gets relocated to a temporary workstation on a different floor. She makes the coffee anyway, out of habit, and then looks at it and doesn't know what to do with it. At approximately 2:17, someone comes looking for her. Not because of the corridor. Episode G. Pressure. Some things exist because of the container. Tonight they found out this isn't one of those things.

She finds out his first name. Not from him. A nurse comes through at 2:17 -- the first time anyone else has ever been there at that time -- and says it like it's nothing. Like it's just his name. Because to her, it is. To Lucy, it's the word that exists on the other side of "Dr. Okafor." A word she has no right to. A word she's not supposed to want. And later that night, she almost says it. Episode F. Daniel. Turns out it goes both ways.

She has a day off. That's all. A Tuesday off. Nothing significant about it except that it's the first Tuesday in four months where she doesn't have somewhere to be at 2:17 AM. She makes coffee in her own kitchen. Stands at the window. Watches the morning do what mornings do. And somewhere between the coffee and the window, she realizes she's been thinking about him for the last twenty minutes without noticing she started. That's not the frightening part. The frightening part is that it felt like nothing. Like breathing. Like something her mind does now without being asked. Episode E. Gravity. The connection has outgrown the corridor. She just didn't know it until now.

Something has changed. Not the corridor. Not the coffee. Not the 2:17, which arrives every night with the reliability of a tide. Those things are exactly as they've always been. What changed is that she heard one syllable she was never supposed to hear. And he said it. And neither of them has mentioned it. And the container that has held this thing -- the ritual, the professional register, the mutual performance of nothing-to-see-here -- is still standing. But she can feel where it cracked. Episode D. The bleed-through begins. Some things, once they exist outside their original space, cannot be put back.

She knows now. That's the difference between Episode C and everything that came before it. She knows what the 2:17 means. She knows what the coffee means. She knows what it means when her shoulders drop the moment he comes through the door, and what it means when they don't drop because he hasn't come through yet, and what it means that she can feel the difference. She knows. And she has to go back anyway. Every night. Same corridor. Same window. Same doctor who says her name like it's the first word of something longer he hasn't finished yet. The ritual continues. But innocence is gone. This is Episode C. She is trying to function while knowing. That's a completely different problem.
