Proverbs looks like a book of fridge-magnet advice — work hard, watch your mouth, save your money.But there's a phrase in verse 3 that gives the game away. "Right and just and fair" isn't self-help vocabulary. It's government vocabulary — the language of Deuteronomy 17's rules for kings. Thirty-four verses describing Leviathan — the longest creature description in the Bible. And God's tone? Not anxious. Not dread. Detailed, almost admiring confidence. "I will not fail to speak of Leviathan's limbs, its strength and its graceful form." You cannot defeat Leviathan. You can't pull chaos out with a fishhook. But God can. "Out of the north he comes in golden splendour." He thinks he's illustrating a theological point. He doesn't know he's announcing an arrival. The storm he describes in chapter 37 is the very storm God will speak from in chapter 38. Elihu is the herald who doesn't know what he's heralding. Twenty-five days of human words. Tomorrow — God.
