Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia. HYMN Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest, And in our hearts take up Thy rest; Come with Thy grace and heav'nly aid, To fill the hearts which Thou has made, To fill the hearts which Thou has made. O Comfort Blest to Thee we cry, Thou heav'nly Gift of God most high; Thou fount of life and fire of love, And sweet anointing from above, And sweet anointing from above. Praise be to Thee Father and Son, And Holy Spirit Three in one; And may the Son on us bestow The gifts that from the Spirit flow, The gifts that from the Spirit flow. 𝄞"Come Holy Ghost" by Rebecca Hincke • Available for Purchase [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NTSTMX2/ref=dm_ws_tlw_trk3] • Musical Score [https://divineoffice.org/wp-content/uploads/Come-Holy-Ghost.pdf] • Title: Come, Holy Ghost; Text (attributed to): Rhabanus Maurus, 776-856; Tune: LAMBILOTTE; Artist: Rebecca Hincke; (c) 2017 Surgeworks, Inc. • Albums that contain this Hymn: Hymns and Chants of Divine Office, Vol. 3 PSALMODY Ant. 1 Let God arise, let his enemies flee before him, alleluia. Psalm 68 The Lord’s triumphant entrance into his sanctuary Ascending on high he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men (Ephesians 4:10). I Let God arise, let his foes be scattered. Let those who hate him flee before him. As smoke is blown away so will they be blown away; like wax that melts before the fire, so the wicked shall perish at the presence of God. But the just shall rejoice at the presence of God, they shall exult and dance for joy. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name; make a highway for him who rides on the clouds. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, such is God in his holy place. God gives the lonely a home to live in; he leads the prisoners forth into freedom; but rebels must dwell in a parched land. When you went forth, O God, at the head of your people, when you marched across the desert, the earth trembled: the heavens melted at the presence of God, at the presence of God, Israel’s God. You poured down, O God, a generous rain; when your people were starved you gave them new life. It was there that your people found a home, prepared in your goodness, O God, for the poor. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Ant. Let God arise, let his enemies flee before him, alleluia. Ant. 2 Our God is a saving God; he, the Lord, holds the keys of death, alleluia. II The Lord gives the word to the bearers of good tidings: The Almighty has defeated a numberless army and kings and armies are in flight, in flight while you were at rest among the sheepfolds.” At home the women already share the spoil. They are covered with silver as the wings of a dove, its feathers brilliant with shining gold and jewels flashing like snow on Mount Zalmon. The mountains of Bashan are mighty mountains; high-ridged mountains are the mountains of Bashan. Why look with envy, you high-ridged mountains, at the mountain where God has chosen to dwell? It is there that the Lord shall dwell for ever. The chariots of God are thousands upon thousands. The Lord has come from Sinai to the holy place. You have gone up on high; you have taken captives, receiving men and women in tribute, O God, even those who rebel, into your dwelling, O Lord. May the Lord be blessed day after day. He bears our burdens, God our savior; this God of ours is a God who saves. The Lord our God holds the keys of death. And God will smite the head of his foes, the crown of those who persist in their sins. The Lord said: I will bring them back from Bashan; I will bring them back from the depth of the sea. Then your feet will tread in their blood and the tongues of your dogs take their share of the foe.” Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Ant. Our God is a saving God; he, the Lord, holds the keys of death, alleluia. Ant. 3 Kingdoms of earth, sing praise to God, make music in honor of the Lord, alleluia. III They see your solemn procession, O God, the procession of my God, of my king, to the sanctuary: the singers in the forefront, the musicians coming last, between them, maidens sounding their timbrels. In festive gatherings, bless the Lord; bless God, O you who are Israel’s sons.” There is Benjamin, least of the tribes, at the head, Judah’s princes, a mighty throng, Zebulun’s princes, Naphtali’s princes. Show forth, O God, show forth your might, your might, O God, which you have shown for us. For the sake of your temple high in Jerusalem may nations come to you bringing their tribute. Threaten the wild beast that dwells in the reeds, the bands of the mighty and rulers of the peoples. Let them bow down offering silver. Scatter the peoples who delight in war. Princes will make their way from Egypt: Ethiopia will stretch out her hands to God. Kingdoms of the earth, sing to God, praise the Lord who rides on the heavens, the ancient heavens. He thunders his voice, his mighty voice. Come, acknowledge the power of God. His glory is on Israel; his might is in the skies. God is to be feared in his holy place. He is the Lord, Israel’s God. He gives strength and power to his people. Blessed be God! Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Psalm-prayer Lord Jesus Christ, King of the universe, you have given us joy in your holy meal. Help us to understand the significance of your death and to acknowledge you as the conqueror of death seated at the right hand of the Father. Ant. Kingdoms of earth, sing praise to God, make music in honor of the Lord. Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church. Christ risen from the dead will never die again, alleluia. — Death no longer has power over him, alleluia. READINGS First reading From the first letter of the apostle John 4:11-21 God is love Beloved, if God has loved us so, we must have the same love for one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet if we love one another God dwells in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. The way we know we remain in him and he in us is that he has given us of his Spirit. We have seen for ourselves, and can testify, that the Father has sent the Son as savior of the world. When anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him and he in God. We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. Our love is brought to perfection in this, that we should have confidence on the day of judgment; for our relation to this world is just like his love. Love has no room for fear; rather, perfect love casts out all fear. And since fear has to do with punishment, love is not yet perfect in one who is afraid. We, for our part, love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “My love is fixed on God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. One who has no love for the brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: whoever loves God must also love his brother. RESPONSORY 1 John 4:10, 16; Isaiah 63:8, 9 God first loved us, and sent his own Son to be the sacrifice that frees us from our sins. — We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us, alleluia. The Lord himself has become our savior; he has redeemed us in his love. — We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us, alleluia. Second reading From the treatise On the Holy Spirit by Saint Basil the Great, bishop The work of the Holy Spirit The titles given to the Holy Spirit must surely stir the soul of anyone who hears them, and make him realize that they speak of nothing less than the supreme Being. Is he not called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, the steadfast Spirit, the guiding Spirit? But his principal and most personal title is the Holy Spirit. To the Spirit all creatures turn in their need for sanctification; all living things seek him according to their ability. His breath empowers each to achieve its own natural end. The Spirit is the source of holiness, a spiritual light, and he offers his own light to every mind to help it in its search for truth. By nature the Spirit is beyond the reach of our mind, but we can know him by his goodness. The power of the Spirit fills the whole universe, but he gives himself only to those who are worthy, acting in each according to the measure of his faith. Simple in himself, the Spirit is manifold in his mighty works. The whole of his being is present to each individual; the whole of his being is present everywhere. Though shared in by many, he remains unchanged; his self giving is no loss to himself. Like the sunshine, which permeates all the atmosphere, spreading over land and sea, and yet is enjoyed by each person as though it were for him alone, so the Spirit pours forth his grace in full measure, sufficient for all, and yet is present as though exclusively to everyone who can receive him. To all creatures that share in him he gives a delight limited only by their own nature, not by his ability to give. The Spirit raises our hearts to heaven, guides the steps of the weak, and brings to perfection those who are making progress. He enlightens those who have been cleansed from every stain of sin and makes them spiritual by communion with himself. As clear, transparent substances become very bright when sunlight falls on them and shine with a new radiance, so also souls in whom the Spirit dwells, and who are enlightened by the Spirit, become spiritual themselves and a source of grace for others. From the Spirit comes foreknowledge of the future, understanding of the mysteries of faith, insight into the hidden meaning of Scripture, and other special gifts. Through the Spirit we become citizens of heaven, we enter into eternal happiness, and abide in God. Through the Spirit we acquire a likeness to God; indeed, we attain what is beyond our most sublime aspirations—we become God. RESPONSORY See John 14:27; 16:22; 14:16 Do not let your hearts be troubled. I am going to the Father. When I am taken up from you, I will send you — the Spirit of truth, and your hearts will rejoice, alleluia. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, — the Spirit of truth, and your hearts will rejoice, alleluia. CONCLUDING PRAYER Grant, we pray, almighty and merciful God, that the Holy Spirit, coming near and dwelling graciously within us, may make of us a perfect temple of his glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. — Amen. ACCLAMATION (at least in the communal celebration) Let us praise the Lord. — And give him thanks.

Psalm 85 Our salvation is near God blessed the land when our Savior came to earth (Origen). O Lord, you once favored your land and revived the fortunes of Jacob, you forgave the guilt of your people and covered all their sins. You averted all your rage, you calmed the heat of your anger. Revive us now, God, our helper! Put an end to your grievance against us. Will you be angry with us for ever, will your anger never cease? Will you not restore again our life that your people may rejoice in you? Let us see, O Lord, your mercy and give us your saving help. I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Canticle – Isaiah 26:1-4, 7-9, 12 Hymn after the defeat of the enemy The city wall had twelve foundation stones (see Revelation 21:14). A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us. Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith. A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever! For the Lord is an eternal Rock. The way of the just is smooth; the path of the just you make level. Yes, for your way and your judgments, O Lord, we look to you; your name and your title are the desire of our souls. My soul yearns for you in the night, yes, my spirit within me keeps vigil for you; when your judgment dawns upon the earth, the world’s inhabitants learn justice. O Lord, you mete out peace to us, for it is you who have accomplished all we have done. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Ant. We have placed all our hope in the Lord, and he has given us his peace, alleluia. Ant. 3 The earth has yielded its fruit; let the nations be glad and sing for joy, alleluia. O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shed its light upon us. So will your ways be known upon earth and all nations learn your saving help. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and exult for you rule the world with justice. With fairness you rule the peoples, you guide the nations on earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. The earth has yielded its fruit; let the nations be glad and sing for joy, alleluia. READING Acts 13:30-33 God raised Jesus from the dead, and for many days thereafter Jesus appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are his witnesses now before the people. We ourselves announce to you the good news that what God promised our fathers he has fulfilled for us, their children, in raising up Jesus, according to what is written in the second psalm, “You are my son; this day I have begotten you.” Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) – a moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church. RESPONSORY The Lord is risen from the tomb, alleluia, alleluia. — The Lord is risen from the tomb, alleluia, alleluia. He hung upon the cross for us, — alleluia, alleluia. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, — The Lord is risen from the tomb, alleluia, alleluia. CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH Ant. The Lord has risen from the dead as he promised; let all the earth rejoice and be glad, for he shall reign for ever, alleluia. Luke 1:68 – 79 The Messiah and his forerunner Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Ant. The Lord has risen from the dead as he promised; let all the earth rejoice and be glad, for he shall reign for ever, alleluia. INTERCESSIONS Christ the Lord promised to send us from the Father their Holy Spirit. Let us give Christ glory and ask him: Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit. Lord Jesus, may your word dwell in us in all its richness, — that we may thank you in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles. Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit. Through the Spirit you have made us children of God, — grant that through the Spirit we may join with you in always calling on God as Father. Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit. Give us wisdom in our daily lives, — that we may do everything for God’s glory. Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit. You are patient and full of compassion, — make us live at peace with all mankind. Lord Jesus, give us your Spirit. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. — Amen. DISMISSAL May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. — Amen.

Psalm 120 Longing for peace To the Lord in the hour of my distress I call and he answers me. “O Lord, save my soul from lying lips, from the tongue of the deceitful.” What shall he pay you in return, O treacherous tongue? The warrior’s arrows sharpened and coals, red-hot, blazing. Alas, that I abide a stranger in Meshech, dwell among the tents of Kedar! Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for fighting. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Psalm 121 Guardian of his people Never again will they hunger and thirst, never again know scorching heat (Revelation 7:16) I lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. May he never allow you to stumble! Let him sleep not, your guard. No, he sleeps not nor slumbers, Israel’s guard. The Lord is your guard and your shade; at your right side he stands. By day the sun shall not smite you nor the moon in the night. The Lord will guard you from evil, he will guard your soul. The Lord will guard your going and coming both now and for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Psalm 122 The holy city, Jerusalem You have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22) I rejoiced when I heard them say: Let us go to God’s house. And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built as a city strongly compact. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord. For Israel’s law it is, there to praise the Lord’s name. There were set the thrones of judgment of the house of David. For the peace of Jerusalem pray: “Peace be to your homes! May peace reign in your walls, in your palaces, peace!” For love of my brethren and friends I say: Peace upon you. For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Ant. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. READING See Acts 4:11-12 This Jesus is “the stone rejected by you the builders which has become the cornerstone.” There is no salvation in anyone else, for there in no other name in the whole world given to the men by which we are to be saved. Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) A moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church. Psalm 119:97-104 XIII (Mem) Lord, how I love your law! It is ever in my mind. Your command makes me wiser than my foes; for it is mine for ever. I have more insight than all who teach me for I ponder your will. I have more understanding than the old for I keep your precepts. I turn my feet from evil paths to obey your word. I have not turned away from your decrees; you yourself have taught me. Your promise is sweeter to my taste than honey in the mouth. I gain understanding from your precepts; I hate the ways of falsehood. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Psalm-prayer Make us so love your law, Father, as to ponder it continually in our hearts. May it bear fruit in works acceptable to you. Psalm 74 Lament for the destruction of the Temple Do not fear those who can only kill the body (Matthew 10:28). I Why, O God, have you cast us off for ever? Why blaze with anger against the sheep of your pasture? Remember your people whom you chose long ago, the tribe you redeemed to be your own possession, the mountains of Zion where you made your dwelling. Turn your steps to these places that are utterly ruined! The enemy has laid waste to the whole of the sanctuary. Your foes have made uproar in your house of prayer: they have set up their emblems, their foreign emblems, high above the entrance to the sanctuary. Their axes have battered the wood of its doors. They have struck together with hatchet and pickaxe. O God, they have set your sanctuary on fire: they have razed and profaned the place where you dwell. They said in their hearts: “Let us utterly crush them: let us burn every shrine of God in the land.” There is no sign from God, nor have we a prophet, we have no one to tell us how long it will last. How long, O God, is the enemy to scoff? Is the foe to insult your name for ever? Why, O Lord, do you hold back your hand? Why do you keep your right hand hidden? Yet God is our king from time past, the giver of help through all the land. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. II It was you who divided the sea by your might, who shattered the heads of the monsters in the sea. It was you who crushed Leviathan’s heads and gave him as food to the untamed beasts. It was you who opened springs and torrents; it was you who dried up ever-flowing rivers. Yours is the day and yours is the night. It was you who appointed the light and the sun: it was you who fixed the bounds of the earth: you who made both summer and winter. Remember this, Lord, and see the enemy scoffing; a senseless people insults your name. Do not give Israel, your dove, to the hawk nor forget the life of your poor ones for ever. Remember your covenant; every cave in the land is a place where violence makes its home. Do not let the oppressed return disappointed; let the poor and the needy bless your name. Arise, O God, and defend your cause! Remember how the senseless revile you all the day. Do not forget the clamor of your foes, the daily increasing uproar of your foes. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: — as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Psalm-prayer Lord, our faithful God, you permitted the temple of the old covenant to be destroyed and your people to be persecuted by unbelievers. Do not forget the new covenant sealed with the blood of your Son. Make the Church your spiritual house, and make us living stones built upon Christ so that a full and true temple may be founded at last. Ant. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. READING See 1 Peter 3:21-22a You are now saved by a baptismal bath. This baptism is no removal of physical stain, but the pledge to God of an irreproachable conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He went to heaven and is at God’s right hand. Sacred Silence (indicated by a bell) A moment to reflect and receive in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely with the word of God and public voice of the Church. The disciples rejoiced, alleluia. — When they saw the risen Lord, alleluia. — Amen. ACCLAMATION (only added when praying in community) Let us praise the Lord. — And give him thanks.
