At 27 years old, PhD student Dan ward was struggling to fight off the dreaded 'freshers flu'. Returning to his home town of South Shields, he headed to the GP, and eventually was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy ... or in his words "a big heart" Cardiomyopathy is a serious, often progressive disease of the heart muscle that impairs the heart's ability to pump blood, potentially leading to heart failure - and by 40, Dan was on life support awaiting a transplant. In this episode of Elbows Out, Dan talks to journalist Lucinda Borrell about the physical, but also mental implications of living with a long term health condition, and how these experiences have shaped his life and views of the world. Elbows Out: Moona

In 2023 social media influencer Moona Lifts was sent home from the hospital, effectively on palliative care. For years she had been in and out of child and adolescence mental health services to treat her eating disorder, but nothing was working. Then, after a chance trip to a martial arts class with her brother she discovered the world of body building. Now with half a million tik Tok followers and almost 150k instagram followers, Moona is training for her first competition. But what has she learnt from her experiences? How has this influenced her perspective on life and relationship with her body? Award winning journalist Lucinda Borrell discusses this in Episode three of 'Elbows Out' Warning: This episode discusses eating disorders, mental health and suicidal ideation. Should listeners continue to listen to the program, please do so with care. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast.
