aflevering Black & Tan Audiobook by Douglas Wilson artwork

Black & Tan Audiobook by Douglas Wilson

Listen to this audiobook in full for free on http://hotaudiobook.com [http://hotaudiobook.com] Title: Black & Tan Subtitle: A Collection of Essays and Excursions on Slavery, Culture War, and Scripture in America Author: Douglas Wilson Narrator: Aaron Wells Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 58 mins Language: English Release date: 01-15-18 Publisher: Canon Press Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences Publisher's Summary: Even though America is fiercely divided between the left and the right and protests are becoming increasingly violent, both sides of the political aisle remain committed to secularism and increasingly to looser standards of sexual propriety. If we want to understand contemporary American culture wars, we must first come to grips with the culture wars of the 19th century. In this book, Douglas Wilson explains how our nation's failure to remove slavery in a biblical fashion has led us to many of the quagmires we find ourselves in and until we grapple with issues like racism, hate speech, and the biblical position on slavery, we will continue to repeat the same mistakes our ancestors did. This collection of essays lays out the answers from a view unafraid of historic, biblical orthodoxy, as well as addressing some of the controversies surrounding the previous edition of the book. Members Reviews: Kindle Edition: Dozens, if not Hundreds of OCR Errors I haven't read this yet, but the number of OCR errors is extremely distracting. Yes, I only paid 99 cents for it, but it's the principle. So, 1 star is totally based on technical issues. Will revise rating when I have the temperament to slog through the errors. Accurate book, but apparently often misunderstood. One of the best on the topic We are often faced with a false choice: Does the Bible support slavery or not? If we say no, then we can be accused of being selective in our application of the Bible because there are some passages that seem to support the concept. If we say yes, then we are horrible racist people and the Bible is a racist book. Some choice! If the Bible was wrong about slavery, then maybe it is wrong about homosexuality too! Wilson points out that the Bible does not see slavery as evil in and of itself and that godly people from Abraham to Philemon could own slaves provided that they treated them in a biblical way. He posits that some Southern slave owners may have treated their slaves in a biblical way. The Bible does not demand immediate emancipation. If we are not careful, we may end up being "more righteous" than the Bible and give the impression that the Bible is wrong on slavery or does not really mean what it says. Wilson roundly condemns racism and is glad that slavery is gone in the US. His contention is that the overreaching federal government that freed the slaves is also the overreaching federal government that gave us Roe v. Wade so in the long run, we are not better off. Wilson's primary concern is not to defend the south or slavery, but to defend what the Bible says about slavery and show how it could have applied to the South had anyone been interested in doing so. Mark Noll makes some of the same points in his less controversial book The Civil War as a Theological Crisis. Doug Wilson's Confession from a Paleo-Confederate Everyone kept telling me Doug Wilson supports slavery and they pointed to a book which he wrote over a decade ago, Slavery As It Was (there was a counterpoint written by two professors from Idaho University, Slavery As It Wasn't). That book is out of print because of major citation errors by his co-author.

aflevering Making the News Popular Audiobook by Anthony M. Nadler artwork

Making the News Popular Audiobook by Anthony M. Nadler

Listen to this audiobook in full for free on http://hotaudiobook.com [http://hotaudiobook.com] Title: Making the News Popular Subtitle: Mobilizing US News Audiences Author: Anthony M. Nadler Narrator: Robert J. Eckrich Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 01-04-18 Publisher: University Press Audiobooks Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences Publisher's Summary: The professional judgment of gatekeepers defined the American news agenda for decades. Making the News Popular examines how subsequent events brought on a post-professional period that opened the door for imagining that consumer preferences should drive news production - and unleashed both crisis and opportunity on journalistic institutions. Anthony Nadler charts a paradigm shift, from market research's reach into the editorial suite in the 1970s through contemporary experiments in collaborative filtering and social news sites like Reddit and Digg. As Nadler shows, the transition was and is a rocky one. It also goes back much further than many experts suppose. Idealized visions of demand-driven news face obstacles with each iteration. Furthermore, the post-professional philosophy fails to recognize how organizations mobilize interest in news and public life. Nadler argues that this civic function of news organizations has been neglected in debates on the future of journalism. Only with a critical grasp of news outlets' role in stirring broad interest in democratic life, he says, might journalism's digital crisis push us towards building a more robust and democratic news media. The book is published by University of Illinois Press. Critic Reviews: "This important book offers a penetrating and original analysis of how news audiences are mobilized...path-breaking contribution to media studies and journalism history...." (Victor Pickard, author of America's Battle for Media Democracy) "An illuminating, challenging, and highly readable account." (Kathy Roberts Forde, author of Literary Journalism on Trial: Masson v. New Yorker and the First Amendment)

aflevering Luxúria: Como ela mudou a História do Mundo [Lust: How it Changed the History of the World] Audiobook by Maurício Horta artwork

Luxúria: Como ela mudou a História do Mundo [Lust: How it Changed the History of the World] Audiobook by Maurício Horta

Listen to this audiobook in full for free on http://hotaudiobook.com [http://hotaudiobook.com] Title: Luxúria: Como ela mudou a História do Mundo [Lust: How it Changed the History of the World] Author: Maurício Horta Narrator: Daniela Tibau Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 56 mins Language: English Release date: 12-13-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences Publisher's Summary: "Quem nunca pecou que atire a primeira pedra", disse Jesus na Bíblia. The End of Heaven Audiobook by Sidney Dekker artwork

The End of Heaven Audiobook by Sidney Dekker

Listen to this audiobook in full for free on http://hotaudiobook.com [http://hotaudiobook.com] Title: The End of Heaven Subtitle: Disaster and Suffering in a Scientific Age Author: Sidney Dekker Narrator: Sidney Dekker Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 36 mins Language: English Release date: 12-12-17 Publisher: Sidney Dekker Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences Publisher's Summary: In this deeply personal audiobook, Sidney Dekker narrates his own experiences with disaster and suffering, and in the process, he examines a largely unexplored dilemma. Our scientific age has equipped us ever better to explain why things go wrong. But this increasing sophistication actually makes it harder to explain why we suffer. Accidents and disasters have become technical problems without inherent purpose. When told of a disaster, we easily feel lost in the steely emptiness of technical languages of engineering or medicine. Or in our drive to pinpoint the source of suffering, we succumb to the hunt for a scapegoat, possibly inflicting even greater suffering on others around us. How can we satisfactorily deal with suffering when the disaster that caused it is no more than the dispassionate sum of utterly mundane, imperfect human decisions and technical failures? Broad in its historical sweep and ambition, The End of Heaven is as rich as it is moving.

aflevering Raw Spirit Audiobook by Iain Banks artwork

Raw Spirit Audiobook by Iain Banks

Listen to this audiobook in full for free on http://hotaudiobook.com [http://hotaudiobook.com] Title: Raw Spirit Author: Iain Banks Narrator: Tom Cotcher Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 23 mins Language: English Release date: 11-24-17 Publisher: Whole Story Audiobooks Genres: Nonfiction, Social Sciences Publisher's Summary: In a bid to uncover the unique spirit of the single malt whisky, author lain Banks has decided to undertake a tour of the distilleries of his homeland. His tour of Scotland combines history, literature and landscape in an entertaining and informative account. Members Reviews: self-description epit-o'-me I think the title of this book "Raw Spirit" is autobiographical, i.e., Iain is describing himself in his usual way of making puns where it suits him. Iain is someone who almost can't believe that he is making a living doing what he does (writing) while having the relative freedom to live life his way and on top of that get hired to go walkabout (mostly on wheels) through Scotland to drink single malt scotch. He spends as much time reflecting on the Scottish roads and countryside, the Iraq war, British taxes, Australian red wine (of a specific bottling), Scottish cooking, favorite cars and motorbikes, the US President, firecrackers, and personal friends who accompany him, as he does on tasting single malt scotch whiskey. This is why I gave the book only 3 stars, because someone seeking more information on Scotch should go elsewhere, and that's the honest part of me as a reviewer. OTOH, if, like me, you adore Penfolds Grange (I have the largest 3 decade collection in the East US), damn good scotch, well-engineered motor vehicles on twisty roads, close/old friends, & warped skiffy stories; and you hate the Iraq war, the 'dubya' President, the use of taxes for miltary and complete BS properness, then the rating for this book should be 5 stars. And it doesn't hurt that this book drove me to my fave stores to hunt rare SMs as well for a small fortune. The fact that I like Iain's stories, particularly the skiffies, is just the best icing on the cake. Aside from the Glenfiddich Havana Reserve, that is. An' heer's tu ya. Fine Drams of a Small Country Having been there, appreciated the almost Personal Guide to the Distilleries of Scotland- with the help of google earth too. The personal touch is a nicely written, with help from his friends and family, we get to travel and enjoy the landscape, the whiskeys and Iain's fine humour. Of course his finest dram coincides with mine, and that was thanks to my friend Chris. He is getting this book as a Real Book, in the mail. Iain Banks or as Iain M. Banks, has been a touchstone for me for a long time, and I have not read all his offerings, Disappointing This book is more like a rambling, diarrhea-of-the-mouth blog about the author's past adventures and escapades than it is about the landscape and whisky distilleries of Scotland. I slogged through it, but it was disappointing from such a well-known writer. Felt like I was noodling around Scotland with a friend! And I discovered Laphroaig and Bowmore among many others in the process. Thank you Iain! A Brilliant trip through Scotland A fun read in its own right, for any fan of Iain Banks this is a warm invitation into a joyful life that ended too soon. The book is filled with Banks' self-effacing humor and not just a little education on the regions of Scotland and their best known export.
