The Supremacy of Christ | Colossians 2:16-23

In Colossians 2:16-23, Paul reminds the Colossian believers that because Christ has fulfilled the law and secured their salvation, they must not let anyone judge or disqualify them through man-made religious rules, dietary restrictions, special observances, mystical experiences, or extreme self-denial. These practices may appear wise or spiritual, but they cannot overcome the power of sin and often lead to legalism, pride, or confusion. Instead, believers are called to hold fast to Christ, the head of the Church, from whom true spiritual growth, unity, and maturity come. While every Christian continues to struggle with sin, victory is not found through self-made religion but through the finished work of Jesus, who offers forgiveness, freedom, and new life by His Spirit.

The Supremacy of Christ | Colossians 2:6-15

Pastor Matt Dean walks us through Colossians 2:6–15, where Paul urges believers to continue walking with Jesus in the same way they first received Him—by grace through faith—remaining rooted, strengthened, and thankful in Christ rather than being taken captive by worldly philosophies and human traditions. In Colossians 1:24–2:6, Paul demonstrates that the supremacy of Christ is most clearly seen not only in moments of strength but also through suffering, weakness, and perseverance. He rejoices in his hardships because they serve God's purpose of making Christ known, and he proclaims the great mystery of the gospel: "Christ in you, the hope of glory." Drawing from his own experiences of persecution, loss, and affliction, Paul testifies that God's power is made perfect in weakness and that believers can endure because Christ lives within them. He ultimately calls believers to live by faith in Jesus, trust Him in every circumstance, and experience the strength, comfort, and community that come from knowing and following Him.

In Colossians 1:15–23, Paul presents Jesus Christ as absolutely supreme over all things—Creator of the universe, Sustainer of creation, Head of the Church, and Savior of His people. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God, fully God in human flesh, through whom all things were made and by whom all things hold together. Through His death on the cross, He reconciles sinful people to God, making peace and presenting believers holy and blameless before Him. Because Christ is preeminent in creation, redemption, and salvation, the proper response is steadfast faith and a life that gives Him first place in every area—trusting Him to hold all things together and living for His glory.

Colossians: The Supremacy of Christ | Colossians 1:14
