AI Generated Podcast

I generated this podcast a week back using Google’s NotebookLM [https://notebooklm.google.com/] based on my Twenty Years of Engineering Practice [https://thejeshgn.com/2023/02/23/twenty-years-of-engineering-practice/] blog post. Before I publish it here, I wanted to check what my friends and colleagues thought about it. Most thought it was an actual podcast discussing my article. They also thought it had a standard flow; once, I told them it was generated by a model. Some were surprised, and others found patterns that match most conversation-based (and not original content) on existing content-type podcasts. I thought the quality was okay; you could identify the patterns once you know a model generated it, but it is very tough to figure out if you don’t. It can be helpful if you don’t have the option to read or listen to the original article. It kind of works like a summary in the form of a conversation where AI hosts are faking certain things to make it enjoyable. In India, how it will get used on WhatsApp is left to your imagination. We already have videos with commentary with foreign accents to make them look authentic or newsworthy. We will have to see how this tech will get used in that context. The next elections in India will be filled with fake videos and audio, not just messages. Imagine the kind of myth-busting tools we need. episode How to be a Good Software Developer artwork

How to be a Good Software Developer

Yesterday I spoke to students of NPTEL. The topic was “How to be a Good Software Developer”. It’s more like my advice to my younger self. The talk went on quite well except for few internet glitches. It was also special we because I was part of NPTEL’s engineering team at Google. I touched upon the following points. I think each one can be a talk by themselves. 1. Empathy for your users 2. Code is for your team mates 3. Think before you code 4. Be a duct tape programmer [https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2009/09/23/the-duct-tape-programmer/] 5. Take notes1 6. Have side projects 7. Learn to be curious 8. Learn the process and tools 9. Write more2 10. Learn to use Unicode! Ofcourse after the talk in the Q/A session there were questions about preferred programming languages, frameworks etc. I answered them as much as possible. May be I will do an FAQ blog post. I am still getting used to live streaming. You can see me being uncomfortable in the beginning. I was okay after two minutes. I have recorded offline videos using OBSProject [https://obsproject.com/]. It’s an amazing tool. This is the first time I have used it for streaming. It works like a charm. You should try. I also used my Zoom H1 3 to record the audio offline. I have edited the same. You can listen to it in your favorite podcast player. 1. Includes documentation and comments ↩ 2. Design documents, how-tos, longer emails, detailed bug reports and blog posts ↩ 3. Not the software. Hardware recorder [https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1-handy-recorder] ↩ The post How to be a Good Software Developer [https://thejeshgn.com/2020/04/16/how-to-be-a-good-software-engineer/] first appeared on Thejesh GN [https://thejeshgn.com].

ನಂತರ ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು. episode Listen to Panchavadyam – Temple Orchestra artwork

Listen to Panchavadyam – Temple Orchestra

I did some recordings of Panchavadyam (Temple Orchestra) at Sri Sankarankulangara Temple festival (chuttu valakku) in Thrissur. > Panchavadyam [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panchavadyam] (Malayalam: പഞ്ചവാദ്യം), literally meaning an orchestra of five instruments, is basically a temple art form that has evolved in Kerala. Of the five instruments, four — timila, maddalam, ilathalam and idakka — belong to the percussion category, while the fifth, kombu, is a wind instrument. > > > Much like any chenda melam, panchavadyam is characterised by a pyramid-like rhythmic structure with a constantly increasing tempo coupled with a proportional decrease in the number of beats in cycles. However, in contrast to a chenda melam, panchavadyam uses different instruments (though ilathalam and kompu are common to both), is not related very closely to any temple ritual and, most importantly, permits a lot of personal improvisation while filling up the rhythmic beats on the timila, maddalam and idakka. It’s part of my effort to record my surroundings. I hope you like it. Let me know what do you think. episode Rains artwork

Rains

I love listening to sound of nature or white noise while working. I have tried to record some [https://soundcloud.com/thejeshgn/raining-in-bangalore] before. They were of average quality. Mostly because they were recorded on a smart phone. Recently I acquired a Zoom H1n [https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1n-handy-recorder]. I have been trying to record on it. I am yet to get a hang of it1. I am also trying to understand and build a DIY setup for binaural recording. I don’t think it should be that difficult given how cheap microphones are and I am not expecting to produce the *bestest* audio. > Binaural recording [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_recording] is a method of recording sound that uses two microphones, arranged with the intent to create a 3-D stereo sound sensation for the listener of actually being in the room with the performers or instruments. This effect is often created using a technique known as “dummy head recording”, wherein a mannequin head is outfitted with a microphone in each ear. Binaural recording is intended for replay using headphones and will not translate properly over stereo speakers. In the mean time enjoy the rains of Thrissur 2 1. I need to buy a deadcat for it ↩ 2. In November! ↩ The post Rains [https://thejeshgn.com/2019/11/11/rains/] first appeared on Thejesh GN [https://thejeshgn.com].
