History with Dad
The Viking Age changes permanently in this episode of History with Dad. Between 865 and 878, we follow the arrival of the Great Heathen Army and the shift from seasonal raiding toward conquest, winter campaigning, and permanent settlement. We explore the stories and realities behind Ivar the Boneless and Halfdan Ragnarsson, the capture of York, the collapse of Northumbrian leadership, King Edmund’s final stand in East Anglia, mounting pressure on Mercia, and Alfred’s difficult rise to power in Wessex. Along the way we visit Iceland’s first permanent settlement, the changing politics of Norway, the winter camp at Repton and what archaeology reveals, the beginning of land redistribution, and the emergence of the Danelaw. As Viking ambitions expand beyond raiding and England comes dangerously close to collapse, the Viking world enters a completely new phase.
