What it's like to be an ED nurse at a level 1 trauma center

Many nurses choose to work at IU Health Methodist Hospital because they are drawn to working at a level 1 trauma center where they can care for some of the highest-acuity patients from around the state, and be a part of life-saving care.  This rings especially true for nurses in the Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center at Methodist, who are among the first clinicians working quickly to stabilize these patients. Erika Hill is one of those nurses. What is the Special Pathogens Unit?

If a patient in Indiana is ever suspected to have a highly-infectious disease, like Ebola for example, that patient would be transferred to the Methodist Hospital Special Pathogens Unit (SPU). The patient would receive care from IU Health team members who volunteer on the SPU team.
