S2E20: Say it isn’t over (Sukkah 4:6-8)

We conclude our discussion of the Hoshana Rabba aravot rituals and move on to expanding on other phrases from Sukkah 4:1, specifically, Hallel, simcha and sukkah. We cover three mishnas today, Sukkah 4:6-8. You can find them on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Sukkah.4.6?lang=bi].   Just a quick note that due to an editing error, S2E19 was initially missing one Hebrew sentence. The error has been corrected. If you are hoping to make a siyum, you don’t have to re-listen to the episode if you don’t want to - I include the missing sentence in today’s episode.  You can follow Mishna Accomplished on Instagram at @mishnaaccomplished [https://www.instagram.com/mishnaaccomplished] - only one “h” in “mishna”! I use a lot of Hebrew terms when I'm talking. Check out my glossary here [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1P8RB6qXpZ7gXEa5iYVfrANK7fskmU9Em5OaYlu0Yybs/edit?usp=sharing]. S2E18: Lulav and Arava, Six Seven! Sukkah 4:1-3 with special guest Rabbi Uri Topolosky

Rabbi Uri Topolosky of Kehilat Pardes - the Rock Creek Synagogue - in Rockville, MD, joins me as we start the chapter which tells us the number of times each ritual was performed in the time of the Temple. We learn that the Arba Minim and Aravot were taken six or seven times, depending on when Shabbat fell. We start to discuss the rituals of Nisuch Ha’Mayim (the water libation) and Simchat Beit HaShoeva, the great celebration held daily in the Temple on Sukkot.  You can find these mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Sukkah.3.9?lang=bi]. aflevering S2E17: The Shabbat Lulav (Sukkah 3:13-15) artwork

S2E17: The Shabbat Lulav (Sukkah 3:13-15)

Today is a three-mishna day. We’re doing a few of these since we have short mishnas for a little while. Today’s episode discusses taking the lulav when the first day of Sukkot is also Shabbat. Guess what? They did take the lulav then! They had procedures in place to avoid carrying the lulav in the public domain on Shabbat. Mishna 13 tells us about these procedures, Mishna 14 talks about what happens when people mess the procedures up, and Mishna 15 talks about women taking the lulav on Shabbat, including a few other fun legal add-ins. You can find today’s mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Sukkah.3.13?lang=bi]. aflevering S2E16: Hallel, Shevi’it, Takanot and Omer (Sukkah 3:11-12 featuring Tzipporah Machlah Klapper) artwork

S2E16: Hallel, Shevi’it, Takanot and Omer (Sukkah 3:11-12 featuring Tzipporah Machlah Klapper)

We kick today’s episode off with Sukkah 3:11, which discusses variations in local customs when it comes to saying Hallel. We also are taught a few rules about procuring lulavs and etrogs during the shmittah year. Our second mishna, Sukkah 3:12, is identical to Rosh Hashana 4:3. Since I already discussed this text with Tzipporah Machlah Klapper in S1E15, our episode features a clip of that original episode. You can find today’s mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Sukkah.3.11?lang=bi].
