We’re up to the 2010s. While the pool of influential producers seemed to contract in the ‘90s and 2000s, the 2010s saw an expansion, in line with the explosion of online & streaming music. And how the music of the 2010s started is a far cry from how it ended. Trends went from energetic to nearly comatose. I go over all of that, as well as the most influential producers from an array of genres. Are you into 2010s music? Do you remember how the energy shifted from EDM and pop rock to lo-fi and mellow? What were some of your favorite albums and artists from that decade? Discuss dammit! BONUS MxTRA: The DEATH of GENRE BIAS [https://www.patreon.com/MUSICisnotaGENRE/posts/162718821] ~~~~ *intro music credit: REC - "Wake Up High" [https://recarea.bandcamp.com/track/wake-up-high] *mid roll music credit: The Drop - "Outerloper" [https://recarea.bandcamp.com/track/outerloper] Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. For that I use the Billboard charts – mostly from the US and occasionally from other countries.  The more I do that, the more I notice something. The songs that were the biggest chart hits are RARELY the same song that’s the artist’s biggest STREAMING HIT.  So for this episode, I’m comparing the two, using prominent artists from each decade. And I form some pretty startling conclusions. You will be SHOCKED at what the REAL HITS are. Have you noticed this discrepancy? Do you tend to like the artist’s original (chart) hits, or their legacy (streaming) hits? Which artist’s hits differences were the most shocking? And did I miss any big ones? ~~~~ *intro music credit: REC - "You Make Me Wanna" [https://recarea.bandcamp.com/track/you-make-me-wanna-remastered-2022] (from RECcollection: The Best of REC 2007-2020) Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. SUPPORT THIS PODCAST! Join Patreon [https://www.patreon.com/MUSICisnotaGENRE] Get some merch [https://www.bonfire.com/store/rec--mxg-merch/] ~~~~ I was all set to do a bonus episode on girl groups, in conjunction with one of my boy band episodes, but in researching them I found the topic far too rich, and decided to do a full proper episode. A MEGA episode. In fact, the LONGEST MxG EVER.  Like with the boy band episodes, though with a markedly different trajectory, I take us far back in history and through to today, highlighting the most significant girl groups from every era, and reminding us that – like former girl group member Beyonce sang: Who run the world? Girls! Have you been into girl groups? Did you prefer the classic girl groups of the 1960s, or were you more of a ‘90s-2000s fan? Were you aware how different their history has been from boy bands? Do you think girl group solo stars have been as influential as those from boy bands, or even more? What are your favorite girl groups? Discuss dammit! BONUS MxTRA: Girl group solo stars [https://www.patreon.com/posts/159144832] ~~~~ *intro/outro music credit: REC - "Wake Up High" [https://recarea.bandcamp.com/track/wake-up-high] *mid roll music credit: The Drop - "Outerloper" [https://recarea.bandcamp.com/track/outerloper] Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
