Do we tell the ones that we love that we love them? Growing up "I love you" or "Love You" was not something that was often said in our house or rather was hardly said in our house. I don't recall hearing it from neither of my parents nor my grandparents to each other or to any of us kids growing up. I believe that it was just a Jamaican culture thing. We knew that they loved us by how they treated us, and other gestures, hugs, kisses, being there. They would tell us through cards and letters but not words out of their months. I learned later in life that words matter as well.

Episode 10: Daddy Issues

I had a very peculiar relationship with my father. I knew that he loved me, but he did not show it in the normal way. He never told us that he loved us growing up, nor hugged us nor kissed us nor played with us like other fathers did. He would do that with his nieces and nephews, even with his friends kids but not with his own flesh and blood. However, when the grand-kids came, he would do that with them. He took us to the moves, to dinner every year on my mother's birthday, to the beach every Sunday growing up. He was a good provider but not a gentle father. The first time I remember hearing my father tell me that he loved me, was when he was asking for our forgiveness on a visit to Jamaica when we were having a meal together, the day before we (my kids, my mother, my brother, and his family, and I) heading back home to Washington State. In retropective, I now understand that was because of how he was brought up. I only wish, he had told me sooner. I now live with regret of what could have been if I had a little more time with him.

Episode 9: Intentional versus Mistake

Intentional versus mistake can feel the same to the person on the end of the hurt. We react differently to the person dishing out the hurt depending on the intention of the person. Did they intentionally want to hurt us or was it a mistake and I just got hurt as a result. We are more likely to forgive someone who mistakenly hurt us, than someone who intentionally hurt us. This episode focuses on our reactions to those situations, and our resulting forgiveness or malice.
