Daveigh Elizabeth Chase was a versatile American actress and singer who rose to prominence as a prolific child star in the early 2000s. Born on July 24, 1990, in Las Vegas and raised primarily in Albany, Oregon, her entry into professional acting was sparked by a chance car accident that stranded her family in Los Angeles when she was eight years old, leading her to begin auditioning for roles.Chase is most widely recognized for two vastly different roles she portrayed in 2002. She provided the voice for Lilo Pelekai, the quirky and lovable lead in Disney's Lilo & Stitch, a role she continued to perform across several sequels and a television series. Simultaneously, she became a horror icon as Samara Morgan in The Ring, portraying the ghostly figure who crawls out of television sets. This performance earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, where she famously beat out several established adult actors. In addition to these landmark roles, Chase provided the English-language voice for Chihiro in the acclaimed film Spirited Away and played Samantha Darko in the cult classic Donnie Darko and its 2009 sequel, S. Darko. Her television career was highlighted by a significant 32-episode run on the HBO drama Big Love as Rhonda Volmer, alongside guest appearances on popular series such as ER, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Charmed, and CSI.Despite her early success, Chase largely vanished from the entertainment industry after her final film role in 2016. Her later years were marked by significant personal hardship, including struggles with addiction, homelessness, and health issues. In 2017, she faced legal trouble when she was arrested on an outstanding warrant after dropping a dying man off at a hospital, though authorities clarified she was not a suspect in his death. Her manager later revealed a tragic financial contrast in her life: while she allegedly had millions of dollars in unclaimed residuals from her work on Lilo & Stitch, she was reportedly unable or unwilling to access these funds during her final years.Daveigh Chase died on June 16, 2026, at the age of 35. Her death was caused by meningitis and a blood infection that led to sepsis and organ failure. Reports from her boyfriend and manager indicated that she had been admitted to a Los Angeles hospital for malnutrition earlier that month. Following her passing, a GoFundMe was established to support her final wishes for a "sense of home and peace," though her manager criticized the fundraiser, asserting that a trust account existed to cover her final expenses. Chase is remembered for a brief but impactful career that left a lasting legacy across animation, horror, and prestige television.
