Art for art’s sake, or l’art pour l’art, is a philosophy that originated in France in the early 19th century that suggests the purpose of art is not to serve some higher moral, cultural, or political purpose; rather, the value lies in the artistic pursuit itself. This bohemian slogan inspired a movement advocating that art needs no justification. On this episode, we chatted with Josh Gallina, the artistic director of Bloody Nails Cinema, about creating for the sake of creating and allowing love of an art form to be reason enough to pursue it.
