Professor Dorothy Roberts

We are pleased to welcome Professor Dorothy Roberts to the show. Professor Roberts is the George A. Weiss University Professor of Law & Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, with joint appointments in the Departments of Africana Studies and Sociology and the Law School, where she is the inaugural Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights. She is also founding director of the Penn Program on Race, Science & Society. Her books include Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty; Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare ; Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century; and Torn Apart: How the Child Welfare System Destroys Black Families—and How Abolition Can Build a Safer World , as well as more than 100 articles and essays in books and journals, including “Race” in the 1619 Project book. Today we sit down with the members of Team Keshia: Julie Koehler, Associate Director of the Homicide Task Force Kyan Keenan, Assistant Public Defender with the Homicide Task Force Sierra Bartlett, Mitigation Specialist Holly Krig, Director of Organizing with Moms United Against Violence & Incarceration. Team Keshia discusses the tragic case of Keshia Golden who is facing First Degree Murder charges for defending herself against her long-time abuser after he attacked her when she was 8 months pregnant. The Cook County State's Attorney has decided to continue to prosecute her despite the overwhelming evidence showing Keshia acted in self-defense and campaign promises to protect survivors of domestic violence.
