What role should guns play in modern American society, and what role should they play in the future? Is being a stoic sufficient for living a virtuous life? Is democracy really the best form of government? Charles Haywood joins me to answer these questions and more. Charles is a retired entrepreneur who now runs a website called The Worthy House [https://theworthyhouse.com/] and a podcast [https://open.spotify.com/show/16GCHsMkmbWRyTcJm6TMzv?si=573a6ecf30124cef] of the same name. He primarily writes essays based on his thoughts on various books he’s read on politics, history, and religion. Unlike many political commentators, Charles spends very little time chiming in with hot takes on current events, and much more time trying to identify the fundamental failures of modern society, and what we can do to meaningfully correct them, so that the future is a place we can look forward to. In this interview, we touch on a wide range of topics including gun ownership, the pitfalls and promises of The Enlightenment, what “virtue” really consists of, how religion impacts politics and societal flourishing, as well as Charles’ applied political philosophy, Foundationalism. If you’re concerned with the direction Western society is headed, and the United States in particular, you’ll enjoy this interview.
