The Shakespearean Shrew
What are you scared of? More importantly, why? In this episode actor Paxton Kliewer and I will discuss monsters and the societies (and their prejudices and fears) that gave birth to them. We will discuss the disconnect that seems to exist between our ability to look at fictional monsters and ourselves. We will discuss a society that fears the sexuality of the “other” and how that was made manifest in The Tempest’s Caliban and The Odyssey’s Charybdis (a gaping, insatiable, vaginal abyss–not kidding). We will take about the protective nature of monsters whether that be a creature of the swamps, Little Red Riding Hood, or even Superman. Join us as we laugh and fumble through some of the hard questions and try like hell not to get cancelled along the way. And go support Paxton Kliewer as Caliban, Miriam Worley as Miranda, Dalten Hall as Ferdinand, Lance Marsh as Prospero, and fearless leader David Weber along with many other OSP friends as they take on The Tempest at OSP from June 11th to June 28th. Paxton’s Monster Movie Recommendations: Obsession Teeth Nope Brightburn (if you want to see one of your heroes fall) Halloween (but maybe not all of them) Paxton’s Book Recommendation: Stephen King’s The Library Policeman (personal warning - some scenes are painful to read) **The name of the South Korean toilet ghost is the Cheuksin. Synopsis (credit to OSP) Exiled sorcerer Prospero conjures a mighty storm to bring his usurping brother to the shores of his enchanted island. There, spirits, lovers, clowns, and conspirators collide in a world shaped by illusion and desire. As Miranda and Ferdinand discover first love, Ariel yearns for freedom, and Caliban plots rebellion, Prospero must choose between vengeance and forgiveness. Shakespeare’s final solo play weaves together magic, mischief, and reconciliation, guiding audiences toward a luminous ending where old wounds heal and new futures emerge. The arts are under attack, and buying theater tickets and books is a great way to show your support and fight back.
