What a Tape Measure Can't Measure What do a tape measure and Bastille Day have in common? At first glance, not much. One is a simple tool used to measure distance. The other commemorates one of history's most significant revolutions. But together, they ask a powerful question: How do we measure a life that is becoming free? In this episode, we explore the surprising history behind the tape measure alongside the story of Bastille Day and discover how both invite us to look beyond numbers. Tape measures can calculate height, width, and length, but they cannot measure courage, resilience, healing, or hope. Likewise, the storming of the Bastille in 1789 was about far more than the walls of a prison—it became a symbol of breaking free from fear, oppression, and the belief that change was impossible. Grief often builds invisible fortresses around us. We begin measuring ourselves by the time since our loss, our productivity, our age, or how "far along" we think we should be. Yet the most meaningful progress is rarely something that can be measured with inches, calendars, or comparisons. Through stories from New York, Paris, and history itself, this episode reminds us that while milestones matter, they are only part of the story. The greatest transformations happen where no measuring tape can reach. In This Episode * The fascinating history of the tape measure * The meaning and legacy of Bastille Day * The hidden Statue of Liberty overlooking Paris * Why some of life's greatest milestones cannot be measured * The invisible fortresses grief can build * Choosing freedom over comparison in our healing journey Reflection Questions * What have I been measuring that doesn't truly define me? * What emotional fortress am I ready to leave behind? * Where have I grown in ways no tape measure—or calendar—could ever capture? * What would greater freedom look like in my life today? If this episode encouraged you, please follow Travel thru Grief, leave a review, and share it with someone who may be measuring themselves too harshly. Some things can be measured in inches. Some moments change history. And the most important journeys are measured by the freedom we find along the way. Until next time... Keep traveling through.

National Cheer Up the Lonely Day

National Cheer Up the Lonely Day July 11 Bonus Episode Loneliness isn't always visible. Sometimes it's the widow sitting alone at dinner. Sometimes it's the coworker who quietly eats lunch by themselves. Sometimes it's the neighbor whose lights never seem to have visitors. And sometimes...it's us. In this special bonus episode of Travel thru Grief, we're celebrating National Cheer Up the Lonely Day by exploring the incredible power of simple acts of kindness. You don't have to solve someone's problems. You don't have to have the perfect words. Often, a text message... A phone call... A handwritten note... A smile... Or simply letting someone know they matter... ...can change the course of an entire day. If you've been grieving, you know what it feels like when someone remembers you. You also know how healing it can be to become that person for someone else. Today's episode is an invitation to look beyond ourselves—not to ignore our own grief, but to discover that compassion has a remarkable way of creating connection for everyone involved. Kindness doesn't erase pain. But it reminds us that none of us were meant to carry it alone. Because kindness connects us all. Reflection Questions * Who comes to mind when you think of someone who may be lonely today? * What small act of kindness could you offer this week? * When was the last time someone unexpectedly made your day? * How might reaching out also bring healing to your own heart? Today's Kindness Ideas ❤️ Send a thoughtful text. ❤️ Make a phone call. ❤️ Leave an encouraging note. ❤️ Bring someone a smile. ❤️ Tell someone why they matter. If today's episode encouraged you, please follow Travel thru Grief, share it with someone who may need a little extra kindness, and leave a review. Every share helps this message reach someone who may be feeling alone. Until next time... Keep traveling through. ❤️

Preserving Memory Tones

Preserving Memory Tones Why can one song transport us back to a moment in our lives before we've even finished hearing the first few notes? In this episode of Travel thru Grief, we explore the extraordinary relationship between music, memory, identity, and healing. From the soundtrack of our childhood to the songs that carried us through heartbreak, celebrations, road trips, graduations, weddings, and quiet moments alone, music has a remarkable ability to preserve not only memories—but the emotions attached to them. As National Day of Rock 'n' Roll approaches on July 7, we celebrate more than a genre of music. We celebrate the way rock 'n' roll—and every style of music that followed—became part of our personal stories. Rock, pop, R&B, blues, jazz, country, classical, gospel, folk, hip-hop, and so many other genres all become chapters in the soundtrack of our lives. Together we'll explore: • Why certain songs instantly transport us back in time • How music becomes emotionally attached to life events • Why melodies often survive when other memories fade • The role music plays in grief, resilience, and healing • How every generation leaves behind its own musical fingerprints • Why preserving music is also preserving our collective history Whether you're remembering a first dance, a family road trip, a concert, someone you've loved and lost, or simply the joy of turning up the radio with the windows down, this episode is an invitation to honor the soundtrack that has quietly accompanied your life. Because memories don't always arrive through photographs. Sometimes... They arrive through a melody. Reflection Prompt If your life had a soundtrack, what three songs would tell your story—and what memories do they still carry today? Thank you for traveling through grief with me. There is always a way thru. — Travel thru Grief is hosted by Ellen Beckemeyer, certified Martha Beck Wayfinder Life Coach, helping people navigate life's transitions with hope, curiosity, and courage. July 4th Traveling this Land

America at 250: Milestones, Memory, and the Courage to Keep Living Happy Fourth of July. As America celebrates 250 years, this episode explores why milestones matter—not because they're perfect numbers on a calendar, but because they invite us to pause long enough to notice that we have truly been living. For me, the Fourth of July has always carried another meaning. It would have been my Grandpa's birthday. It would have been Julie's birthday. For a few precious years, we celebrated her birthday together before staying out late enough to welcome Independence Day. Those memories are forever stitched together. This isn't an episode about fireworks. It's about what remains after the fireworks fade. It's about how grief and celebration often exist in the very same moment. Together we'll reflect on: • Why milestones help us measure a life, not just time. • The surprising connection between personal grief and our shared human story. • What it means to belong—to family, to community, to a nation, and to the earth beneath our feet. • How healing rarely happens alone. • Why choosing hope is an act of courage. Whether you're celebrating with family, spending today quietly, remembering someone you love, or simply trying to make it through another holiday, I hope this conversation reminds you that your story matters. Because every journey—whether joyful or heartbreaking—is part of the larger human story. And perhaps freedom isn't only something nations celebrate. Perhaps freedom is also found in allowing ourselves to keep living after life has changed. Thank you for letting me travel with you. There is always a way thru. Reflection Prompt What milestone in your life deserves to be honored today—not because everything turned out perfectly, but because you kept going? If this episode encouraged you, please follow Travel thru Grief, leave a review, and share it with someone who may need a little hope this holiday weekend. Independent in Grief

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we pause to explore another kind of independence—the deeply personal journey of rebuilding a life after loss. Grief has a way of changing everything. The decisions once made together become yours alone. Traditions shift. Dreams are rewritten. Even simple moments can remind you that your life now looks different than it once did. But independence after grief isn't about pretending you don't need anyone. It's about discovering that you are capable of carrying your story forward while honoring the people who helped shape it. In this special America 250 episode, we explore: * The surprising similarities between our nation's story and our own stories of grief. * Learning to trust yourself again after loss. * Making decisions without second-guessing every step. * Finding courage when the future feels uncertain. * Honoring the past without becoming trapped there. * Building a life that reflects who you are becoming—not just who you were. * Why independence is not the absence of love, but the freedom to continue loving while moving forward. Whether you're grieving the death of someone you love, the end of a relationship, a career, a dream, or another life transition, this episode is a reminder that healing doesn't erase your story—it helps you write the next chapter. As our country reflects on 250 years of resilience, may you also recognize your own strength. You have survived every day that brought you here, and there is still so much life waiting ahead.
