Episode 10: Accepting Our Disabilities | Unfiltered with Reyes & Victor

In Episode 10 of Unfiltered with Reyes & Victor, we have an honest conversation about accepting our disabilities and how that journey has changed as we have gotten older. Alfonso lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Victor lives with spinal muscular atrophy Type 2. Although our disabilities and experiences are different, we both understand what it means to face physical changes, depend on others for support, compare ourselves to people without disabilities, and continue learning how to accept ourselves. We discuss when we first understood our disabilities, the hardest parts of growing up, losing physical abilities, independence, friendship, and whether disability acceptance is something that ever feels complete. Acceptance does not mean every day is easy or that we never feel frustrated. It means continuing to grow while recognizing that our disabilities are part of our stories, but not the only thing that defines us. Invisible in the Room: Talk To Us, Not Around Us

In this episode of Unfiltered with Reyes & Victor, we talk about something many disabled people experience but not enough people understand: being ignored, talked around, or treated like we are invisible. We discuss what it feels like when people greet everyone else in the room but skip over the disabled person, or when they ask the caregiver, parent, sibling, or family member questions instead of speaking directly to us. This episode is about disability awareness, respect, ableism, and why people need to stop assuming disabled people cannot speak, understand, or answer for themselves. We share our thoughts, personal experiences, and the message we want people to understand: disabled people are not background characters in their own lives. If we are in the room, include us. Talk to us, not around us.

What If We Outlive Our Parents? A Real Talk About Caregiving

In Episode 7 of Unfiltered with Reyes & Victor, we have one of the most emotional and important conversations we’ve had so far: what happens if we outlive our parents? For many people with disabilities, parents are more than just parents. They are caregivers, protectors, advocates, and the people who understand our daily needs better than anyone else. We talk about how different life might have been, what we may have done differently, and whether our personalities, friendships, dreams, and mindset would still be the same. But this conversation is not about regret. It’s about reflection, honesty, and recognizing how SMA and muscular dystrophy have shaped who we are today. No pretending. No sugarcoating.
