Rabbi David Semah hosts classes Monday through Friday at 6:45 AM at West Deal Shul. In this class on Parashat Matot-Masei, Rabbi Semah explores why the Torah takes the time to recount all 39 places the Jewish people camped in the desert. He opens with a Midrash that compares God to a father who, after nursing his sick child back to health, lovingly recounts every stop of their difficult journey together. Rashi understands this recounting as a reminder of the sins the Jewish people committed at each location. However, a deeper layer of the Midrash reveals a second reason: Hashem expresses Hakaras HaTov — gratitude — even to the inanimate land that served as a refuge for the Jewish people, and these places will one day be rewarded with renewed life and prosperity. Rabbi Semah concludes with a striking Zohar that describes a future time when all the nations of the world will conspire against Jerusalem, but God will ultimately laugh at their efforts and bring about a dramatic, public downfall of Israel's enemies before the eyes of the entire world. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (0:00) Introduction: Matot-Masei (1:31) Why Torah recounts the desert camps (1:53) Midrash: Parable of the sick child (3:22) Rashi: Recounting sins in desert (3:47) Midrash: Hakaras HaTov to the land (5:52) Reward for hosting Torah (7:19) Zohar: Nations unite against Israel (9:08) God's revenge on anti-Semites - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visit: westdealshul.org Sponsorships: west.deal.classes@gmail.com
