From What; For What?

The New Name

The sermon explores the profound significance of names as acts of authority and identity, tracing their biblical importance from Genesis to Revelation. Using Jacob's wrestling match in Genesis 32 as a primary example, it illustrates that true transformation requires honest self-confession before God. What is more, we are given a new name, that we don't know yet, on a white stone and one day when we stand before him Jesus Christ will acknowledge us before His father and angles calling us our new name! Ultimately, we need to abandon our old, sinful identities and embrace the new life offered through Jesus Christ.

The Acceptable Year

The sermon explores the prophecy of Isaiah 61, illustrating how Jesus Christ fulfilled the promise to preach good news to the poor and bind up the brokenhearted. It emphasizes that true salvation requires humility and spiritual poverty, acknowledging one's need for God rather than relying on self-sufficiency. By connecting Isaiah's words to Luke 4, the message highlights Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah who exchanges mourning for joy and offers liberty from sin. We should remember that while Jesus came first to save, He will return to execute judgment, urging listeners to accept His healing grace before the acceptable year ends.

From What; For What?

There is a steep generational gap in this country. There is also an even steeper social gap today. We can no longer depend that when we tell persons, you must be saved, they have any idea what we are talking about. That begs the question, what are we saved from? The answer is that we need to be saved from separation from God. We are born into sin and continue to sin, that separates us from God, just as Adam was separated when he sinned. It also means that we will experience eternal separation. There is only one way to overcome this separation, that is the death, burial, and resurrection of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. When we say, you need to be saved, that's what we mean, you must be saved from the separation between you and God. But, it does not stop there. What are we saved for? This is a different question and an important one. Failing to understand leads us to only focus on salvation and neglecting our walk, discipleship, sanctification, growth, etc. that leads us to that relationship with God. That's right, once we have been rescued from separation we must choose to live into the relationship with God. There are three dangerous faults people make here. 1) only celebrating the moment of salvation, 2) failing to understand that knowledge about God is not a relationship with him, and 3) that activity for God is not a relationship with God. I conclude this message reminding every one of all spiritual ages that there is work left to do. No matter how old or young, the Lord is waiting for use to engage and one of the best ways to do this is with purpose with each other.

A New Heart

Today we emphasizes that God's redemptive work is motivated by His own glory and holy name rather than human merit. Drawing from Ezekiel 36, it explains the necessity of a supernatural transformation where God replaces a dead, stony heart with a living one through the Holy Spirit. This divine intervention addresses the inherent sinfulness of humanity and establishes a new covenant relationship. Believers are called to represent Christ faithfully in the world while continually seeking cleansing for ongoing sins. The message concludes with an urgent invitation for the unsaved to respond to God's grace and receive this spiritual renewal.

The Other Brother

Tonight we explore the Parable of the Prodigal Son and his brother to address two distinct audiences: those who have rebelled against God and those who rely on religious self-righteousness. I contend that both the younger son's wild rebellion and the elder son's bitter obedience lead to separation from the Father if not met with genuine repentance and humility. Central to the message is the character of God, who actively seeks out the lost and eagerly welcomes them back with unconditional grace rather than condemnation. I share my personal testimony of realizing that outward religious performance without a true relationship with Christ is equally dangerous as open sin. Ultimately, the sermon calls listeners to recognize their need for God's mercy and to respond by coming to themselves and returning to the Father who is waiting with open arms.
