Jimmy Stewart: It's a Wonderful American Life 5 Jun 2024 --- James Maitland Stewart is that rare and admirable human being who could truthfully claim that everyone liked him. During his lifetime and in the years since, it was virtually impossible to find anyone recording a bad word against him, or relating an anecdote in which he appeared less than a gentleman. His distinctive drawl, coupled with his hesitant, stuttering vocal delivery made his voice instantly recognizable, and when it was heard, it was heeded. Late in his long and distinguished career, he provided the voiceover for a major soup company’s television commercials. He did not appear in the advertisements. Campbell’s reported hundreds of telephone calls to their offices, demanding to know if that was really Jimmy’s voice promoting their soup. His charm and good looks made people trust him and lower their guard. British journalist Sandy Fawkes described Knowles as "tall, well over six foot, broad-shouldered, narrow-hipped and as slender as a wraith" and a “cross between Robert Redford and Ryan O’Neal.” And as you will soon find out, she had a unique, personal perspective on the ruthless killer. All of this was for show, however. Beneath the confident and affable smile was hiding something dark. Ever since he was a little boy, Paul Knowles decided that rules and laws weren’t meant for him; and that he could take whatever he wanted and do whatever he pleased to anyone. His entire life was one steady escalation of brutality and sadism - from petty theft to robbery, to sex crimes, and, ultimately, to murder. A four-month-long savage killing spree left, at least, 18 people dead. Proponents argued that if one believed in angels, devils, and life after death, all part of Christian dogma, one must necessarily believe in the existence of the immortal soul. Spiritualism was the art of contact with part of that immortal soul, and was thus neither witchcraft nor heresy. Why some possessed the ability while others did not was a subject of debate. Later arguments against spiritualism were based on science, rather than Biblical verses.
