Episode 138 - Are You on Track With Your BNI Goals? | The 2026 Mid-Year BNI Reset

We’re halfway through 2026. The question is: Are you getting everything you should be getting from your BNI membership? In this special solo episode of the BNI San Diego Podcast, Andy Cruz takes an honest look at the halfway point of the BNI year and walks through the exact numbers, habits, and relationships every BNI member should evaluate before heading into the second half of 2026. Using the BNI Power of One as a framework, this episode is a practical mid-year reset for any member who wants to generate more referrals, build stronger relationships, improve their networking skills, help grow their chapter, and maximize the return on their BNI membership. This isn’t about shame or public accountability. It’s about looking at your numbers, identifying what’s working, owning what isn’t, and making your next half your best half. 🚀 Your BNI Mid-Year Scorecard At the halfway point of the year, ask yourself: ✅ Have I passed at least 26 referrals? ✅ Have I completed approximately one one-to-one per week? ✅ Have I invited at least six visitors? ✅ Am I consistently earning CEUs and improving my networking skills? ✅ Have I updated my GAINS Profile, Contact Sphere, and Best 10 Customers? ✅ Have I met one-to-one with every member of my chapter? ✅ Am I helping my chapter grow by filling open classifications? If the answer to any of those questions is no, you still have six months to change the outcome. 🔥 In This Episode You’ll Learn: - How to use substitutes strategically during summer vacations - Why every BNI member should evaluate their referral numbers at mid-year - How to identify members you need to become a better referral partner for - Why the Contact Sphere worksheet can become a referral gold mine - How to make your one-to-ones more effective in the second half of the year - Why longtime BNI members should update their one-to-one worksheets - How to use the BNI Podcast, books, and training to sharpen your networking skills - Why experienced members should consider retaking Member Success Program - How Stack Days and Visitors Days can help grow your chapter - Why every new member creates referral opportunities that did not exist before they arrived 💡 The Most Important Question: Who do you need to become a better referral partner for? It’s easy to focus on the referrals we haven’t received. But what about the referrals we haven’t given? The second half of the year is an opportunity to identify the members you haven’t referred yet, schedule new one-to-ones, better understand their ideal clients, and become more intentional about creating opportunities for them. The same accountability works in reverse. Who already knows the people you want to meet—and what could you do to better educate them about how to refer you? 🎯 Your Second-Half Action Plan Three things: 1) RESET anything that is out of alignment. Look at your numbers, habits, attendance, referrals, one-to-ones, visitors, and CEUs. Be clear about where you actually stand. 2) REPOSTURE yourself for a productive second half. Check your attitude. Recommit to showing up with purpose, positivity, and a true Givers Gain® mindset. 3) RECOMMIT to the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Write down your action plan. Put it on your calendar. Share it with someone who will hold you accountable. You still have six months. Make your next half your best half. episode Episode 137 – You Can Leave BNI…but BNI Never Leaves You | Building Community & Lifelong Relationships with Martha Chinnok cover

Episode 137 – You Can Leave BNI…but BNI Never Leaves You | Building Community & Lifelong Relationships with Martha Chinnok

Can a networking organization change the way you live your life? For Martha Chinnok, the answer is a resounding yes. In this inspiring episode of the BNI San Diego Podcast, Ed Wilson sits down with Martha Chinnok, Executive Director of BNI Southeast Michigan, to discuss how the principles of BNI extend far beyond weekly meetings and business referrals.  After serving as a BNI Director in Southern Arizona, Martha stepped away from BNI during a major life transition, relocating across the country to Michigan. But something surprising happened...She realized that although she had left BNI, the BNI way of thinking had never left her.  From building a new community in an unfamiliar state to creating lifelong relationships through service, volunteering, and intentional connection, Martha shares why BNI's core values become part of who you are—not just something you practice on Wednesday mornings.  In This Episode You’ll Learn:  ✅ Why relationships—not referrals—are the true foundation of business success  ✅ How BNI's Core Values shape your life long after you leave a chapter  ✅ The power of community when starting over in a new city  ✅ Why volunteering is one of the fastest ways to build meaningful relationships  ✅ How Givers Gain® creates opportunities far beyond business  ✅ Why a positive attitude becomes a lifelong habit  ✅ How recognition and appreciation build stronger teams and deeper trust  ✅ Why authentic relationships always outperform transactional networking  ✅ What it feels like to return to BNI after years away  Key Takeway:  BNI isn't simply a networking organization. It's a framework for living. When you consistently practice generosity, build authentic relationships, maintain a positive attitude, and invest in people, those habits become part of your identity—whether you're inside a BNI chapter or not.  As Martha reflects, she realized she was naturally living BNI's Core Values long after stepping away from the organization because they had become ingrained in the way she approached life and relationships.  "Don't be a second-rate version of someone else. Be a first-rate version of yourself."  One of the most powerful moments of the conversation reminds us that success doesn't come from copying someone else's leadership style—it comes from becoming the very best version of yourself.  👍 Like this video if you believe relationships are life's greatest investment.  🔔 Subscribe for weekly conversations on business networking, entrepreneurship, leadership, and personal growth.  📤 Share this episode with someone who is building a new business, moving to a new city, or looking for a stronger community.  Have a topic you’d like us to highlight? Episode 136 - 🎙️ Leadership Starts Before the Title | How Serving in BNI Makes You a Better Business Leader

What separates great leaders from everyone else? It's not the title. It's the willingness to raise your hand before you're ready.  In this episode of the BNI San Diego Podcast, Ed Wilson sits down with entrepreneur, podcast producer, and longtime BNI leader Andy Cruz to discuss one of the most overlooked opportunities for personal and professional growth: leadership through service.  As BNI chapters prepare for annual leadership transitions, Andy and Ed break down what leadership really means, why stepping into a leadership role benefits far more than just the chapter, and how serving others can dramatically improve your confidence, communication skills, credibility, and business performance.  Whether you're a business owner, entrepreneur, manager, salesperson, or someone looking to become a stronger leader, this conversation will challenge you to stop waiting for permission and start preparing for your next level of growth.  🚀 In This Episode You'll Learn:  ✅ Why leadership development starts long before you receive a title  ✅ How serving on a BNI leadership team improves your business skills  ✅ The importance of delegation, trust, and accountability  ✅ Why great leaders stay in their lane and empower others  ✅ How leadership roles build confidence in public speaking and communication  ✅ The connection between chapter leadership and business success  ✅ Why preparation and planning are critical for effective leadership  ✅ How to identify leadership potential in yourself and others  ✅ The lessons learned from both leadership successes and failures  ✅ Why every entrepreneur should find opportunities to lead  🔥 Key Takeaway  Leadership isn't something you're given. episode 🎙️ Why Givers Gain Works: The Psychology of Reciprocity in Business | Jenn Edwards cover

🎙️ Why Givers Gain Works: The Psychology of Reciprocity in Business | Jenn Edwards

What if the secret to getting more referrals, building stronger relationships, and growing your business wasn't selling at all? In this episode of the BNI San Diego Podcast, Ed Wilson sits down with longtime BNI leader and relationship-building expert Jenn Edwards to explore one of the most powerful principles in human behavior: The Law of Reciprocity. Inspired by the bestselling book Influence, Jenn breaks down the psychology behind why people naturally want to help those who help them first—and how this principle aligns perfectly with BNI's core philosophy of Givers Gain®. But there's a catch. Many business professionals misunderstand reciprocity and accidentally turn it into manipulation, creating the exact opposite result they intended. If you've ever felt uncomfortable being sold to, struggled with networking, or wondered why some people naturally attract opportunities while others constantly chase them, this conversation is for you. 🚀 In This Episode You'll Learn: ✅ What the Law of Reciprocity actually means ✅ Why "Givers Gain®" works from a psychological perspective ✅ The difference between authentic relationship-building and sales tactics ✅ Why people can sense when they're being manipulated ✅ How trust is built naturally through generosity ✅ Why desperation repels opportunities in business ✅ The difference between transactional networking and relational networking ✅ How to create genuine influence without selling ✅ Why successful entrepreneurs focus on helping first ✅ How to build a referral-based business that people actually enjoy supporting 💡 Key Takeaway People don't want to be sold. They want to be understood. The strongest business relationships are built when your first goal is helping others—not closing a deal. As Jenn explains, true reciprocity happens when you give with no agenda attached and allow trust to develop naturally over time. That's where the magic happens. 👇 We'd Love Your Thoughts Have you ever experienced a business interaction that felt authentic and relationship-focused? Or one that felt completely transactional? Episode 134 – Should you really “Follow your Passion” | Leadership & Networking with Jon Lyon

What if the advice you've heard your entire life is wrong? "Follow your passion." It's one of the most common pieces of advice given to entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals. But what if the real secret isn't finding your passion...What if it's bringing your passion with you wherever you go? In this episode of the BNI San Diego Podcast, recorded live at the BNI National Conference in Orlando, Florida, Executive Director Ed Wilson talks with Jon Lyon, Executive Director of BNI Colorado West Slope, for a powerful conversation about leadership, visibility, mindset, and the impact of showing up with intention. Jon shares how a simple lesson completely changed the direction of his life and career, ultimately leading him from a travel-tech startup to BNI leadership. Together, Ed and Jon explore what it means to be present, how to develop influence, and why the energy you bring into a room matters more than you think. 🔥 In this episode you'll discover: ✅ Why "follow your passion" may be bad advice ✅ The difference between finding passion and bringing passion with you ✅ How visibility leads to credibility in business ✅ Why presence is one of the most underrated leadership skills ✅ How to become the person people naturally gravitate toward ✅ The importance of being fully present in conversations ✅ Why leadership starts with serving others ✅ How repetition builds confidence and influence ✅ Practical ways to increase your impact in networking groups and business settings 💡 Key Takeaway: People don't remember every word you say. As Jon shares in this episode, leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room—it's about showing up consistently, being present, and helping others succeed.
