Welcome to Case Cache! A one-woman true-crime podcast focusing on Canadian law, casefiles, and (alleged) injustices. A typical episode involves me combing through many sources and critically analyzing cases within the context of existing criminological theory. I plan on posting episodes monthly or bi-monthly, exploring how individual cases may link to systemic issues, miscarriages of justice, landmark decisions, and legal technicalities. I hope you join me in exploring the world of Canadian law!
The Rafay Family Murders: False Confessions and the Mr. Big Technique
In the early hours of July 13th, 1994, Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns returned to the Rafay family home after a night out. Upon arrival at the home, the pair found that Atif's parents and sister had been brutally murdered. A year later, the boys confessed to the crimes in a "Mr. Big" undercover investigation led by the RCMP. However, the pair assert their innocence to this day claiming that their confessions were false and coerced. In this episode, we investigate the validity of Mr. Big operations and their elicited confessions and whether Atif and Sebastian could be innocent despite their convictions.
