Sermon Notes: The Perception of Love Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Okronipa Main Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 14:1, Galatians 5:6, Mark 11:23-25, 1 Peter 3:8-12. I. The Purpose of the Church * A Place for Healing: The church is meant for "offended" and "weak" people seeking God's help. Believers must be patient with one another's frailties. * The Problem of Offense: Satan uses offense as leverage to break down churches. Leaving a church due to a personal hurt is often a sign of spiritual immaturity and selfishness. * Spiritual Training: Being offended serves as a test to see how far your "love life" has actually developed. II. The Supernatural Power of Love (Agape) * Faith’s Engine: According to Galatians 5:6, faith is "activated, energized, and expressed" through love. Without love, faith for miracles or breakthroughs will eventually shut down. * Beyond Human Sentiment: While human love (Storge, Philia, Eros) is powerful, Agape is the "God-kind" of love that allows a believer to sacrifice for others and forgive even the deepest wrongs. * Miracles through Love: Love has the power to cast out demons and bring healing where standard spiritual warfare might struggle. III. The Doctrine and Discipline of Forgiveness * Unforgiveness as Poison: Holding onto a grudge is described as "drinking poison and expecting the other person to die". * Blocked Prayers: Mark 11:25 teaches that before you pray for a mountain to move, you must first forgive anyone you have something against. * No Conditional Forgiveness: Believers shouldn't wait for an apology to forgive. Forgiveness is a spiritual decision that reopens the door to God's favor. IV. Divine Protection and Long Life * The "Eyes of the Lord": 1 Peter 3 promises that those who seek peace, avoid evil speech, and walk in love will enjoy divine protection and "good days". * Escaping Satanic Traps: Walking in love keeps spiritual doors closed to the enemy. Bitterness often provides a foothold for demonic operations and physical sickness. V. Practical Application: How to Love * Tenderheartedness: Replace hard-heartedness and stubbornness with a soft, easily entreated spirit. * Courtesy and Respect: Love is evidenced in simple courtesy and how we treat those "below" us in social or spiritual status. * Protecting Others: Love seeks to protect and cover the reputations of others rather than exposing their mistakes. Closing Challenge: Identify someone who has treated you unfairly and make the decision to bless them and pray for their welfare, thereby aligning your heart with the nature of God.
