This week we reach one of the most significant turning points in Mark’s Gospel. A blind man receives his sight, Peter finally declares that Jesus is the Messiah, and three disciples witness the extraordinary moment we know as the Transfiguration. Yet running through all of these stories is a surprising theme: Jesus seems to reveal Himself gradually. Why does the blind man see in stages? Why does Jesus tell His disciples not to tell anyone He is the Messiah? Why does Peter get the right answer but still completely misunderstand Jesus’ mission? And what does it mean when Jesus tells His followers to take up their cross and follow Him? Together we’ll explore how Mark uses these stories to show that recognising who Jesus is often happens before we fully understand what kind of Messiah He has come to be. As Peter, James and John begin to see more clearly, we’re challenged to consider whether we’re still open to Jesus revealing more of Himself to us today.
