Bridging Tucson's Digital Divide

Collin Boyce, Chief Information Officer at the City of Tucson, AZ, joins Melissa Ashurst, VP of Emerging Markets at JMA, to discuss the city's award-winning CBRS deployment. In collaboration with its partners, JMA is helping Tucson bring free, public internet access to 5,000 households, largely in the school districts most affected by the digital divide. That's just phase one of the project. This year JMA will begin work on phase two, which will deliver the same reliable connectivity to more public areas across Tucson. With help from JMA, Tucson is extending an economic lifeline to its most vulnerable citizens and preparing its wireless infrastructure for smart city applications. Legacy DAS vs. JMA Software Flexibility

Efficiently building and growing large footprint solutions requires cost-effectively addressing what is needed today, as well as providing a seamless path to critical upgrades when required. JMA’s software-defined remote units (SDRU) address those key elements directly, supporting software deployment flexibility across 9 bands, removing the need to deploy all bands and full power Day 1. Deferring future need-based capacity allows platform owners to deploy a cost-effective solution to address immediate connectivity needs while retaining the ability to upgrade future bandwidth and broader feature capabilities on the fly. This approach provides greater utility of platform warranties as well, deferring warranty start on unused bands until they are activated.

episode Industry 4.0 artwork
Industry 4.0

The move toward the fourth industrial revolution is one where factories have machines that are augmented with wireless connectivity for sensors, control, visual inspection, and more, which in turn are connected to a system that can visualize the entire production line and make decisions on its own. In essence, Industry 4.0 is the trend toward communications, automation, and data exchange in manufacturing technologies and processes that include cyber-physical systems (CPS), the internet of things (IoT), industrial internet of things (IIOT), cognitive computing, and artificial intelligence.
