Maina Kiai is a globally recognized Kenyan human rights activist who served as the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association (2011-2017) and now heads Human Rights Watch's Alliances and Partnerships program. This intensive two-day course offered in April 2020 explored the normative international framework around protest, in order to critically examine through documentaries and social movement literature, new and emerging protest movements across Africa with their changing ecosystems.
