Walter Alvarez was one of them, but his research into plate tectonics was destined to be sidelined. An intriguing opinion would eventually lead him, his collaborators, and the rest of science on an intellectual journey across geology, chemistry, paleontology, and atmospheric science — towards solving one of the great mysteries in Earth's history: What happened to the dinosaurs? Volcanoes are awesome manifestations of the fiery power contained deep within the Earth. These formations are essentially vents on the Earth's surface where molten rock, debris, and gases from the planet's interior are emitted.Volcanoes tend to exist along the edges between tectonic plates, massive rock slabs that make up Earth's surface. About 90 percent of all volcanoes exist within the Ring of Fire along the edges of the Pacific Ocean. Let's discuss the effects on Humans, Plants and other living things. Geology and how it relates to Paleontology will be the topic of discussion on Natures Task Show Fine Art of Paleontology. Join New Mexico Museum of Natural History research associate Ken McKeighen and Ken Boorman n the Fine Art of Paleontology as they discuss geology and how it relates to paleontology. Ken McKeighen has been doing field work since 2009 for the NMMNHS and has made some really cool discoveries. He will explain how understanding geology helped him to discover a new species of Dimetrodon and also how he was able to discover one of central New Mexico's most prolific Early Permian vertebrate fossil sites, the Abo copper mine in the Abo Pass of NM.
