PassageWay Church
John Newton was an overt atheist and slave trader. But after his dramatic conversion, he became a leader in the British abolitionist movement and penned the beloved hymn, Amazing Grace. Before his dramatic conversion, Augustine was a womanizer and an intellectually arrogant philosopher. Yet, he would go on to become the most influential theologian in the history of the church. But the most significant conversion of all was undoubtedly Saul of Tarsus. With the stoning of Stephen, he’d begun to ravage the church, threatening to snuff out the spread of the gospel. However, Saul’s life was radically changed when Jesus stopped him dead in his tracks on the way to Damascus. The persecutor would become a preacher and the protagonist in our story, taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. Saul was a chosen instrument. As we continue reading in Acts 9, we see that not only did Saul get saved, but he immediately began to serve in obedience to the Lord’s calling on his life. While the circumstances of both Saul’s conversion and his apostolic calling are unique, every single follower of Jesus has been converted to contribute. God has a plan and purpose for all those who are in Christ Jesus. Like Saul, it is through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and the encouragement of the local church that we discover the connection between our own conversion and calling.
