This organization commissioned Ray to create labels for their boutique wine. Russell (now part of Marfa) held German POWs, mostly from Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps. In 1944–1945, two of them—Hans Jürgen Press and Robert Humpel—painted large, colorful murals in Building 98 (the former officers’ club). They used house paint in a fresco-style technique on the walls, depicting:• Bavarian Alps-style landscapes with elk and mountains (evoking home).• West Texas scenes inspired by the Marfa area, including cowboys, chuck wagons, branding, prickly pear cactus, and mesas.These murals are preserved today and are a highlight of Building 98 (now an artists’ retreat and historic site open to visitors).
