In light of more influencers getting cancelled this week than I can count on one hand, this episode provides a scathing critique of modern cancel culture. I explore the exclusivity between cancelling influencers & holding them accountable, the inherent privilege in remaining an apolitical internet figure, the concept of political socialisation, and how 'online activism' is often performative, lacking real life application and social utility. Specifically, I unpack TikTok sisters Charlie and Dixie D'Amelio getting cancelled (for a solid day...), and the past racist comments that have resurfaced from Lily Brown and other Australian influencers, to pose the following #NONUANCENOVEMBER hot take : Performative Activism stems directly from Cancel Culture (& vice versa), and are both mutually futile. Plus I reference an article on Obamacare in Trump County, talk about past US bachelorette, Hannah Brown, and give a comprehensive over-analysis on why ALL social media stars SUCK at apologising! For this weeks 'Halloween related' episode, I discuss the concepts of cultural appropriation, the "American Dream Tax", normalised (& often, internalised) racism towards East-Asians, and the importance of considering historical contexts & the lived experiences of others in classifying behaviours/trends as racist. Light hearted stuff, hey? Specifically, I look at the #FoxEye challenge that has been trending on all your fav social media platforms, & Youtuber Emma Chamberlain's now deleted Instagram post where she posed in this insensitive manner, to explore the following question: Do our actions need malicious intent in order to be considered racist? Also, a heated rant regarding influencer Sky Wheatley's latest culturally insensitive controversy, and my very own Anti-Racism "Before you wear that costume, Ask yourself" halloween checklist..... Welcome to the Introductory Episode of The Culture Critic Podcast! A podcast where host, Nethmi Nawarathna, gives a series of hot takes on all things pop culture, current affairs, social habits/trends & media. Instead of replicating the standard episode format & subject matter (as you'll become familiar with in future episodes), I took this exciting first meeting between you and I as a chance to introduce myself, as well as the motivations/inspirations behind this podcast. Reflecting on an anecdotal conversation with a friend, this episodes explores the idea that all human beings are unavoidably hypocrites, as I speak on the notion of ethical dissonance, the importance of growth with a level of self awareness, & pose 'podcasts' as the solution to our default hypocritical state. Take 25 minutes out of your day, get comfortable and join me for Episode 1. Framed as a disclaimer, before the brutal critiquing of ur fav movies, tv shows, influencers, pop culture trends, other media forms as well as current affairs/social issues begins (don't come for me pls)! Enjoy x Make sure to follow the podcast on Instagram @culturecriticpodcast, and you can find all other podcast related links here: http://linktr.ee/culturecriticpod !
