The Iliad Book 23

In which the Achaeans mourn the fallen Patroclus with mournful rites and grand funeral games, where heroes contend in chariot races, boxing, wrestling, running, and other feats of arms and skill, with prizes bestowed by the noble-hearted Achilles. Amidst solemn oaths and divine interventions, friendships and rivalries alike are displayed, as the warriors honour their comrade with rites both tender and fierce beneath the watchful gaze of gods and men.

In which the mighty Hector stands firm outside the walls of Troy, resisting beseeching pleas to retreat, as he faces the swift and indomitable Achilles in a fateful pursuit watched by gods and mortals alike. After a fierce encounter, Hector’s life is taken and his body dishonoured, stirring grief and lamentation within the city as the sorrowful mourners contemplate the cruel toll of war and the fragile fate of his orphaned child.

The Iliad Book 21

In which Achilles pours forth his wrath upon the Trojans at the river Scamander, provoking both mortal strife and divine quarrels, as gods contend fiercely and the very elements rise against him. Yet even as the river god and heavenly host assail him, the mighty son of Peleus drives the routed Trojans within the walls of Ilius, their refuge from despair and death.

In which the mighty gods convene upon Olympus, choosing sides and weaving their influence throughout the clamorous battle between Achaeans and Trojans, whilst Achilles, fiery and resolute, seeks to confront his foes with unrelenting fury.
