KINGDOM CORNER READING ROOM THE PRACTICES DEFINED PRACTICING THE WAY – JOHN MARK COMER Episode Date: June 4, 2026 In today's Reading Room, Matt continues through Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer, exploring what spiritual practices are—and perhaps more importantly, what they are not. Many believers have wrestled with the tension between personal effort and dependence upon God's grace. Are spiritual disciplines simply religious routines? Are they a way to earn God's favor? Or are they something deeper? Drawing from Comer's teaching, this episode examines how the practices of Jesus are not ends in themselves, but pathways that position us to receive the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. IN THIS EPISODE * Why spiritual disciplines are a means, not the destination * The difference between formation and mere religious activity * Why love—not discipline—is the true measure of spiritual maturity * How practices can become lifeless routines when disconnected from relationship * The danger of using spiritual disciplines for appearances or self-righteousness * Why spiritual practices are not about earning God's approval * Understanding the difference between "trying harder" and "training wiser" * How disciplines create space for God's grace and transformation KEY QUOTE > "Spiritual disciplines are the Jesus-designed way of offering yourself to God so that you can draw on what the Apostle Paul called grace—the empowering presence of God's Spirit." POWERFUL INSIGHT A discipline is: > "Any activity I can do by direct effort that will eventually enable me to do what I currently cannot do by direct effort." Just as athletes train to become capable of what they cannot yet do naturally, disciples practice the way of Jesus so they can increasingly live and love as He did. REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. Do you see spiritual disciplines primarily as religious duties, or as ways of making yourself available to God's transforming presence? 2. Where in your life are you trying harder when God may be inviting you to train differently? 3. Are your spiritual habits producing greater love, joy, and Christlikeness—or simply maintaining routine? 4. What is one practice that consistently helps you become more aware of God's presence? FINAL THOUGHT The goal of spiritual disciplines is not performance but formation. Prayer, Scripture reading, worship, Sabbath, community, and service are not spiritual scorecards. They are invitations into a life with God. As followers of Jesus, we do not practice these things to earn His love. We practice them because we are loved, and through them we learn to live more deeply in that love. Join us tomorrow as we continue exploring the practices of Jesus and how they shape a Rule of Life that leads not to legalism, but to freedom, joy, and transformation. The Makeup of Character: Integrity Meets the Demands of Reality

SHOW NOTES In today's Reading Room, we continue our journey through Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality by Dr. Henry Cloud. This chapter moves beyond the common definition of character as simply honesty or morality and explores a deeper question: What kind of person is able to consistently meet the demands of real life? Henry Cloud argues that true character is revealed not merely by what we believe, but by how we respond when life places pressure on us. Relationships, conflict, disappointment, risk, fear, leadership, and responsibility all expose the "makeup" of our character. Along the way, Matt reflects on lessons learned from both management and pastoral ministry, sharing how avoiding difficult conversations often created greater problems—and how God used those experiences to strengthen his own character. One of the greatest encouragements from this chapter is that character is not fixed. Through truth, experience, intentional growth, and the work of God's Spirit, we can become the kind of people who faithfully meet the demands of reality. QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER * What kind of environment am I consistently placing myself in? Is it helping me grow or merely keeping me comfortable? * What opportunity have I been postponing because fear has become louder than faith? * Do difficult people expose weaknesses in my character, or are they opportunities for God to strengthen it? * What kind of wake am I leaving behind in the lives of others? MEMORABLE THOUGHT > "Integrity is the ability to meet the demands of reality." CLOSING REFLECTION Character is formed long before the moment it is tested. When life applies pressure, we don't suddenly become someone new—we reveal who we've been becoming all along. May we allow God to continue shaping us into men and women whose lives leave people, families, workplaces, and communities healthier than we found them.

"Everyone Leaves A Wake..."

EVERYONE LEAVES A WAKE THE READING ROOM Every life leaves something behind. In today's Kingdom Corner Reading Room, we continue our journey through Integrity by Dr. Henry Cloud as we begin Chapter 2: Character, Integrity, and Reality. Through one powerful illustration, Dr. Cloud challenges us to consider a question that most of us rarely ask: What kind of wake am I leaving behind? Just as a boat leaves a visible trail in the water, every person leaves a trail in the lives of others. Our work produces results, but our relationships leave lasting impressions. Success is never measured by accomplishments alone—it is also measured by the condition of the people who have traveled alongside us. In this episode, we explore: * Why character always reveals itself over time. * The two sides of every person's wake: task and relationships. * Why talent can never compensate for poor character. * How unseen relational costs eventually become real organizational costs. * The challenging question every believer should ask: * Are people better because they have walked through life with me? As the reading concludes, Matt reflects personally on his own years in leadership and management, inviting each of us to examine the wake we have left—and the wake we are leaving today. KEY REFLECTION "Would those who have traveled through life with me say they were blessed...or burdened?" SCRIPTURE FOR MEDITATION > "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." > — Philippians 2:4 > "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." > — John 13:35 Growth isn't measured simply by what we accomplish. Kingdom maturity is revealed by both the work we complete and the people we help become stronger along the way. Thank you for joining the Kingdom Corner Reading Room. May today's reading encourage you to leave a wake marked by faithfulness, wisdom, and love.

episode "Discernment: Staying Spiritually Awake cover

"Discernment: Staying Spiritually Awake

Discernment: Staying Spiritually Awake How do sincere, intelligent—even godly—people miss warning signs that are right in front of them? In this second episode of the Discernment series, we explore one of Scripture's repeated themes: the call to remain spiritually awake. Drawing from the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the tragedy of the Titanic, the failures and restoration of Peter, and the divided kingdom under Rehoboam, we discover that deception rarely begins with ignorance. More often, it begins with distraction, pride, complacency, or spiritual drowsiness. Matt also shares a personal childhood story that became a lifelong lesson about desire, self-deception, and the formation of discernment. Discernment is not simply recognizing truth—it is remaining spiritually awake long enough to respond wisely before the moment passes. In this episode: * Why Pearl Harbor illustrates spiritual alertness * The biblical call to "awake, O sleeper" * Peter's journey from failure to mature discernment * Hebrews 5:14 and training our spiritual senses * Pride, fear, and overconfidence as enemies of discernment * Rehoboam and the danger of rejecting wise counsel * A childhood lesson that shaped a lifetime of discernment * How failure can become a classroom for wisdom Key Scriptures * Hebrews 5:14 * Ephesians 5:13–17 * Romans 13:11–14 * 1 Peter 5:8 Questions for Reflection • Where have I ignored warning signs in my own life? • What emotions most often cloud my judgment? • Am I becoming more spiritually alert or merely more informed? • What practice can help me remain spiritually awake this week? Thank you for joining me on The Kingdom Corner Podcast. If this episode encouraged you, please consider following the podcast and sharing it with someone who desires to grow in wisdom and discernment. Stay steady. Stay faithful. Stay spiritually awake.

episode "AMERICA At 250 Years:The Character That Formed a Nation" cover

"AMERICA At 250 Years:The Character That Formed a Nation"

AMERICA AT 250: THE CHARACTER THAT PRESERVED A NATION As America commemorates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, we often remember the famous names and battles—Lexington and Concord, Valley Forge, and Yorktown. Yet one of the greatest moments in our nation's history happened quietly, far from the battlefield, when character triumphed over the temptation of power. In this special Independence Weekend pop-up episode, Matt shares the remarkable story of the Newburgh Conspiracy of 1783, when frustrated officers of the Continental Army considered using military force against the very government they had fought to establish. Through the humble leadership of General George Washington, a potential military coup dissolved—not by force, but through integrity, sacrifice, and moral courage. Drawing from Scripture, this episode reminds us that the strength of a nation ultimately rests not in its military, economy, or political system, but in the character of its people. True national renewal begins in individual hearts that pursue righteousness, humility, and faithfulness before God. IN THIS EPISODE * Celebrating America's 250th anniversary * The forgotten story of the Newburgh Conspiracy * George Washington's defining moment of humility and leadership * Why character can preserve what power alone cannot * The biblical foundation for national flourishing * Personal righteousness as the beginning of cultural renewal * Honoring our nation's past by living faithfully today SCRIPTURE REFERENCES * Proverbs 14:34 — "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." * Psalm 33:12 — "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord..." * 2 Chronicles 7:14 — "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves..." KEY TAKEAWAYS * History is often preserved not only by great victories but by great character. * George Washington's willingness to surrender power became one of the defining moments in American history. * Freedom depends upon citizens who choose integrity over selfish ambition. * Every generation faces moments that test its character. * Lasting national strength begins with personal obedience to God. QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION * What qualities of character do you admire most in George Washington's example? * How does humility strengthen leadership? * In what ways can you help preserve righteousness within your own home, church, and community? * What does it mean to honor the sacrifices of previous generations through the way you live today? MEMORABLE QUOTE > "Nations are not sustained mainly by constitutions, armies, or economies. They are strengthened by character, by integrity, by humility, by people who choose what is right—even when it is difficult." LOOKING AHEAD Join us this Tuesday as the Kingdom People in the Pages of History series continues with the next message in our Virtue of Discernment arc: The Formation of a Discerning Heart We'll explore how God develops discernment—not simply as a spiritual gift, but as a character trait that grows through faithful obedience and spiritual maturity.

episode Integrity: Character Is the Third Essential cover

Integrity: Character Is the Third Essential

SHOW NOTES Integrity – Why Character Matters Most In today's Reading Room we begin a brand-new journey through Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality by Henry Cloud. Although this book was written primarily for entrepreneurs, business leaders, and organizations, its principles extend far beyond business. Character influences every area of life—our marriages, families, friendships, churches, leadership, and our daily walk with Christ. Henry Cloud introduces three essential qualities often found in successful leaders: * Competence — becoming skilled in what you do. * Alliance Building — learning to build healthy relationships that multiply effectiveness. * Character — the quality that ultimately determines whether talent and opportunity will endure. Throughout this opening chapter we are reminded that success is never built upon talent alone. Character determines how we respond under pressure, whether we can face reality honestly, build trust, handle setbacks, and ultimately fulfill our God-given potential. As followers of Christ, these principles encourage us to continually ask not only what we are accomplishing, but also who we are becoming. REFLECTION QUESTIONS • Do you see your character as something already completed, like a finished building, or as something God is still shaping throughout your life? • When life places you under pressure, what does it reveal about the character God has been forming in you? KEY THOUGHT The setting is business. The subject is character. Character affects every relationship, every responsibility, and every area of life.
