episode What Did Kouri Richins Do When Her Sons' Statements Were Read? cover

Beskrivelse

The Kouri Richins sentencing hearing produced an image that crystallized the entire case. As her three sons' statements were read aloud in a Park City courtroom by their therapists, Kouri was observed rolling her eyes and making faces. The boys described fear, locked rooms, and a household where they looked after one another. This look back examines that proceeding and the psychology it laid bare. The contrast was stark. When her own family took the podium to call her devoted and innocent, she dissolved into tears. On what would have been Eric Richins' forty-fourth birthday, Judge Richard Mrazik sentenced her to life without the possibility of parole, plus additional terms on the remaining counts, citing her conviction for attempting the killing, then "doubling down" and completing it for financial gain. Kouri spoke for more than half an hour — her first public remarks since being charged — directing them at her sons, who were not present. She repeatedly told them to "be like your dad," the man she was convicted of killing, denied any role in his death, and urged them not to give up on her. The sons' statements, by contrast, were unequivocal: each asked that their mother remain in prison, with the older boys expressing fear for their safety should she ever be released and a younger son indicating he would feel safe and happy with her behind bars. This segment offers commentary on the dynamics on display in that courtroom — the selective empathy, the disconnect between her account and her children's — while distinguishing established facts from interpretation. We revisit where the matter stood at the time of our reporting. Siders Family: Sheriff Said Livestock Live Better Than THIS

That's the line the Vinton County sheriff used after his deputies walked into a five-room house on Ohmer Street in Hamden, Ohio, looking to serve a misdemeanor warrant and instead found sixteen children living inside. Some couldn't speak. Some couldn't read. None had ever been enrolled in a school. The Ohio Attorney General went further, calling the conditions "pure evil" and saying another day could have ended in deaths. Four adults are now charged with sixty-eight felony counts of child endangerment, with a grand jury still to come and more charges possible. The AG's choice of the word intrafamilial is the kind of detail that tells you the full picture isn't public yet. What's striking is how the system missed this for eighteen years straight. Sixteen children, all born in hospitals, arriving roughly once every thirteen months — and not a single medical professional ever flagged the pattern. Ohio's 2023 rollback of homeschool oversight meant no school system ever came looking either. And Elizabeth Siders, one of the four now facing charges, was married herself at fifteen, with a judge's sign-off, in a state with no minimum marriage age on the books. Tony breaks down the case for the True Crime Today audience: the warrant that accidentally exposed it, the institutions that had every opportunity to catch it sooner, and the uncomfortable question at the center of it — whether the state that approved Elizabeth Siders' marriage at fifteen bears some responsibility for what happened to her children two decades later. episode What Nolan Wells' Friends Erased Before Police Showed Up cover

What Nolan Wells' Friends Erased Before Police Showed Up

Every explanation for how Nolan Wells ended up alone on Horn Island runs through a single, checkable claim: that the friends' boat was taking on water. A marine mechanic could confirm that in an afternoon with a screwdriver and a look at the bilge pump. Nobody appears to have done it — there's no public sign the boat has ever been impounded, inspected, or photographed by anyone with a badge. It's just been sitting at a private dock since the day Nolan disappeared. That's one loose thread. Here's another: Nolan's phone turned up at the boat owner's house with both Snapchat accounts wiped, and nobody called his mother to tell her they had it. Federal law lets any agency send a one-page preservation letter to freeze Snapchat data, Life360 history, and cell records before they auto-delete — no warrant required. Whether Jackson County ever sent one is anybody's guess. Cell tower pings alone could answer whether Nolan's phone left that island while he was still breathing. Sheriff Ledbetter won't confirm whether every friend on that boat has even been interviewed, and Nolan's own best friend — who was actually there — says he's heard nothing from investigators at all. The sheriff's current line is that his office won't be rushed. Fair enough. But preserving evidence isn't a conclusion, it's a deadline, and deadlines don't wait on press conferences. While agencies were still deciding whether any of this counted as urgent, family friend Elmore Wonsley was out searching the island himself at 6 AM on a borrowed boat. The Wells family has done their part. It's worth asking what, exactly, Mississippi has done with theirs. Siders 16 Kids: What Officials Can No Longer Tell You

A judge in Vinton County just signed a gag order that prevents the attorney general's office, the county prosecutor, and the sheriff from making any public statement about the case of sixteen children found in a Hamden, Ohio, home. The day before the order was signed, Ohio approved one million dollars in emergency funding to care for those same children. The order was filed by the defense attorney for Gary Siders Junior, whose unrelated indecent exposure warrant is the only reason deputies ever entered that house. Officials had described what they found — children crammed into a twelve-by-twelve-foot room, unable to communicate, living in conditions compared to livestock pens. The defense argued the language would poison the jury pool. The judge agreed. Truancy records from 2021 show Gallia County knew six Siders children had vanished from school. The cases were closed when the family couldn't be served. Gary Senior was released because the county couldn't afford his medical bills — a fact disclosed at a press conference that would now be prohibited under the gag order. The people who found those children and spoke publicly about the failures that let it happen are the same people who can no longer tell you anything about it. Nolan Wells AND Siders Kids: THIS Is What Officials Did

One sheriff declared no foul play before the investigation started. One county had complaints in hand for five years and never found the children. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis breaks down the Nolan Wells death investigation and the Siders sixteen-kids case together — because the question connecting both cases is the same: what happens when the system fails first and investigates second? On Nolan Wells: what the premature no-foul-play call did to the case trajectory, the contradictions between the friends' statements and the young woman's account, the allegedly deleted messages, the friend who appeared on national television during the active investigation, and the grand jury the DA agreed to for a death publicly called a drowning. On the Siders case: the gag order silencing officials who called it pure evil, the grandfather released because the county couldn't cover his medical costs, the truancy complaints from 2021 that were never served, and Elizabeth Siders — married off at fifteen, mother of all sixteen, facing sixteen felony counts while her own attorney argues she is a victim. Two cases. One conversation. Every failure examined by a former prosecutor. episode Nolan Wells' Mother Unlocked His Phone. What Was There? cover

Nolan Wells' Mother Unlocked His Phone. What Was There?

There is still no cause of death in the Nolan Wells case — and the accounts meant to explain his final hours on Horn Island keep colliding with each other. A week of public pressure has produced theories, celebrity statements, and outrage, but not the one thing everyone actually wants. The first place that gap showed up was his phone. Nolan recorded almost everything he did, so when his mother searched it for the last day he was alive, what she saw became the detail that made his family stop trusting the easy answer. That's the starting point, and it opens into the entire Nolan Wells timeline. He was a college football player from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. On the Fourth of July he went to Horn Island with high school friends. They came back. He didn't. His body surfaced two days later, and the coroner requested a full autopsy because the circumstances were uncertain. Then the record fractures: a young woman says Nolan told her he was returning to the boat, while his friends say he told them he was staying with her. A widely shared video circulates as proof of a confrontation — and a friend steps forward to say it isn't Nolan at all.We work through the contradictions honestly — the ones that fall apart under a closer look and the ones that stubbornly remain. We cover the "no foul play" statement issued before the autopsy, the family flying the body out of state for an independent exam, the public figures funding it, and the race questions officials tried to close prematurely. It [http://prematurely.It] all comes back to a single missing answer: how Nolan Wells died. This is the verified version — no theories, no invented drama, just the timeline, the open questions, and the failures. Subscribe to True Crime Today for the latest.
