Baptism in the Bible has its roots in the Old Testament but takes on its full meaning in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, Israel practiced many forms of ritual washing. These washings were commanded for purification from uncleanness, for priestly consecration, and for approaching God in worship. They symbolized cleansing, repentance, and readiness to stand before a holy God. By the time of Jesus, Jewish converts from the nations also underwent a full‑body immersion as part of entering the covenant community. This was not yet Christian baptism, but it created a familiar pattern: washing, repentance, and a change of identity. In the New Testament, baptism becomes a single, decisive act. John the Baptist introduced a baptism of repentance that prepared Israel for the Messiah. Jesus Himself was baptized to fulfill righteousness and to inaugurate His ministry. After His resurrection, Jesus commanded baptism for all disciples. Christian baptism now signifies union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection; the washing away of sins; the gift of the Holy Spirit; and public identification with the people of God. It marks entrance into the new covenant community and expresses the believer’s new life in Christ. In short, Old Testament washings foreshadowed cleansing and consecration, but Christian baptism reveals their true meaning: participation in the saving work of Christ and incorporation into His body.
