Today we talk about the unique challenges associated with detecting cancer in women with radiographically dense breasts and a new technology that aims to help improve cancer detection rates in patients with dense breast tissue. It's important to recognize that the term "dense breast" doesn't refer to how a breast feels - it simply means that the internal structure is developed in such a way that it obscures the image of potential growths in X-ray imaging. A new technology will allow doctors to see through the dense internal structures and be better able to detect any signs of cancer. It is called the Sofia automated breast ultrasound tomography system and we talk with its inventor about the technology and the issue of dense breast tissue.

Breast cancer is among the most serious health risks facing women today. But the confusing, often contradictory information being circulated about the safety and effectiveness of mammography as a way to detect breast cancer is leaving many women to wonder if mammography is right for them. Don Bloomstrom, President of Marquis Medical - a medical technology firm - was in the studio to talk about what mammography is, the changes in technology and who this type of screening is best for. The goal is to provide women with the information they need so that breast cancer can be detected early while it is still easily treatable.
