Via various initiatives, the organisation is dedicated to ensuring a sustained pipeline of talent to the sector, spotlighting the unique opportunities available in the industry, and enabling those within the workforce to develop their skills to raise the reputation of beauty. As part of this work, the British Beauty Council has commissioned this report which examines the ever-changing beauty landscape and discusses the crucial role of accessible and digestible skincare education in fostering greater clarity, accuracy and informed decision-making among consumers. The Value of Beauty 2023

The personal care industry provides goods and services that households rely on every day, from basic toiletries through to luxury cosmetics and hairdressing and beauty services. In 2019, the British Beauty Council and Oxford Economics launched the first comprehensive study of the value the personal care industry creates for the UK economy in terms of its contribution to GDP and the jobs it sustains. For the first time, this helped to establish an economic footprint of the industry, as it straddles several different official industry classifications. This report by Oxford Economics and the British BeautyCouncil describes findings from a refresh of this research which has quantified how the industry’s economic impact has evolved since 2018. We also present analysis of the wider socioeconomic contribution that the industry makes through its support of employment opportunities for a diverse workforce. The intent of ‘A Beauty Industry That Looks Like You’ has arisen from the many conversations and insights garnered from across the British Beauty Council’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee, and prompted by the desire to inspire and activate those working in the ‘hidden corners’ of our multi-faceted communities across the UK, whilst also highlighting the personal experiences of professionals within the field. Navigating the wide variety of career options in beauty can feel overwhelming, but this report brings a refreshing perspective to the pathways the industry presents. Through the voices of industry workers, we explore everything from product development to marketing, artistry, and retail.
