The Biblical answers the Synod of Dort in 1618-19 gave to each point of the Arminians came to be called the Canons of Dort, otherwise known as the 5-points of Calvinism, or the Doctrines of Grace, also known by the acronym, TULIP. This psalm consists of a deeply mournful protest against David's enemies. --He complains that he does not deserve to be persecuted with such harshness and cruelty. The Westminster Confession of Faith is a formalised theological statement of Reformed Christianity. It declares what was accepted by the Presbyterians, the Reformed Anglicans, and the Congregationalists of 17th Century Britain. Such confessions are very useful declarations of faith, and very useful teaching tools. Indeed, upon ordination, those that subscribe fully to such a confession, are to subscribe to it as a confession of their own faith. But, on a less formal level, the confession of faith, and the experience of faith are two intertwined truths of every born-again believer- --1. The Word Preached--2. The Word Confessed--3. There is one thing to come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, but it is another thing to have full assurance of faith. This assurance is a deepening and a strengthening of faith in Christ. For some believers, it can take time and periods of spiritual challenges before they learn to rest in Jesus, and obtain assurance of faith. So much so, that the Westminster Confession of Faith spent the whole of chapter 18 of the confession on this very topic - Of the Assurance of Grace and Salvation.
