On June 4, 2004, in Ragati Village in Nyeri District, a young mother named Jane Muriruki was the last person seen carrying her sick one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Mary Wanja. She told neighbors she was taking the child to the hospital — but later returned alone, offering conflicting explanations about where the child had gone. The next day, the child's body was discovered floating in a cattle dip. A postmortem revealed the cause of death was strangulation, not drowning, suggesting the little girl had been killed before her body was discarded. Suspicion quickly turned to the mother, who had been the last known person with the child alive.
