#003 - Measuring Youth Mental Health - with Dr. Skye Barbic

Ever stopped to think about how we actually measure mental health, especially for young people? It’s not exactly like checking your temperature — it’s way more complex and personal. So, how do we really know if what we’re doing is making a difference to people's mental health? What’s the secret sauce behind asking the right questions and tracking progress in a way that really matters? Let’s dive into the fascinating (and sometimes surprising!) science of measuring youth mental health, and discover how it can totally change the way we understand and support the well-being of young people. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Skye Barbic, Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia (UBC) to talk about how we measure mental health. Dr. Barbic takes us through the challenges in tracking mental health, why it matters, and how youth-led and participatory approaches could reshape the way we support and care for youth. It’s a conversation that’s as practical as it is inspiring, showing us that mental health measurement is fundamental in supporting young people and really understanding what works.

#001 - Mental Health and Peer Support Networks - with Dr. Victor Ugo

Have you ever just been through something tough, felt vulnerable, and needed to vent with a friend but found yourself with no one available? What if, at that moment, you had a support network available for you through WhatsApp? Yep, that is what MANI (Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative) has successfully managed to do to support young people’s mental health in Nigeria. Join us in this conversation with Dr. Victor Ugo on lived experience and advocacy, the importance of peer support, and engagement of your own community in designing mental health interventions. Dr. Victor is a mental health advocate and founder of the Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI), one of Africa's largest youth-led and user-led mental health networks - Victor’s work facilitated the revolution in the way many young Nigerians talk and think about their mental health. He has studied Global Mental Health at King's College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and has extensive experience in youth mental health, having previous roles such as the Senior Campaign Officer for United for Global Mental Health and Co-Chair of the Child and Youth Working Group of the Global Mental Health Action Network.
