Listen to Electric Monks: A Dirk Gently Podcast
Podcast by Ed
A Podcast devoted to Douglas Adams' lesser known Dirk Gently book franchise and it's numerous different adaptations for all different forms of media. Hosted by four fans of Adams from all corners of the globe: Ed from the UK, Nemo from Australia, Dalek from the USA, and Caen from Sweden. Together, they form the Electric Monks, and they believe that their podcast is a pretty cool and froody one; stick with us for adventure, excitement and really wild things. As featured in the Acknowledgements of 42: The Wildly Improbable Ideas of Douglas Adams, by Kevin Jon Davies.

In the second of a three part episode, Ed and Nemo continue their discussion on the theme of Religion vs. Science throughout the history of Dirk Gently by looking at the two TV shows written in the post-Douglas era: The 2010-2012 BBC4 show and it's Pro-Science, almost atheist viewpoint for Dirk, and by contrast the 2016-2017 BBC America/Netflix show, which presents Holism as a religion, and we have fun going through the show's dialogue and replacing the word "Universe" with "God" and seeing how it changes things. Ed also compares Bart Curlish to the crusaders knights of the Middle Ages. There has been some interesting news but since this was recorded last year (And intended to come out much earlier but the deadline whooshed by and nobody seemed to notice or care, so I figured I'd gotten away with it.) so there is no discussion of the Douglas Adams Explaining the World audiobook coming out somewhere in May-August. In the first of a special three part episode, Ed and Nemo discuss the theme of religion vs. science throughout the history of Dirk Gently, starting with Douglas Adams himself and his own radical atheism, in stark contrast to his religious father and upbringing. We also talk about the two Dirk novels and their portrayals of the afterlife, the Electric Monk, the Norse Gods, and Dirk accidentally creating a God. Ed, Nemo and Louie watch through the 2010 BBC4 Pilot of Dirk Gently starring Stephen Mangan as Dirk, Darren Boyd as Richard MacDuff and Helen Baxendale as Susan Harmison. Does it still hold up after 13 years? Were the changes from the novels justified? Is the wonky and cheap CGI part of the charm? We answer all of these questions and more. 30 minute Video highlights from this commentary: https://youtu.be/fgOnTR4b_4E [https://youtu.be/fgOnTR4b_4E] Feel free to contact us via our website: dirkgentlypodcast.wordpress.com [http://dirkgentlypodcast.wordpress.com/]
